Join Us For A Free Social Media Workshop Presented By the Office of the Orange County Historian
For those working at Hudson Valley historical sites, museums, and not for profits

Goshen, NY -- Johanna Yaun, the Orange County Historian, is pleased to announce that a "Social Media workshop" geared for staff of historical sites, museums, and other not for profits in the Hudson Valley will be held at the Orange County EMS Center, 22 Wells Road, Goshen, NY, on Thursday, July 14 from 2 to 4pm. Hosted by social media expert, Nicole Scholet de Villavicencio, attendees will learn "10 Ways to Improve Your Facebook Page" and tips on how to boost public awareness of their sites or organizations through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Periscope, and other social media sites.
Nicole Scholet is the Vice-President of the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society, and has been doing these workshops for non-profits to share the lessons she's learned in promoting her own organization. "It's crucial that those looking to promote their museums and historical sites learn as much as they can about social media," says Yaun, "With PR budgets being cut and audiences finding information through non-traditional sources, these sites offer the ability to reach hundreds of your target audience. Rather than trying to figure it out on your own, this class will offer helpful tips. Nicole has been very successful in reaching a national audience through branding and social media outreach and I guarantee that everyone who attends will receive extremely valuable information."
In addition to a pen and paper we encourage attendees to bring a laptop to follow along.
There is no fee for this workshop. Walk-ins are welcome, but an RSVP would be appreciated.

Orange County Libraries Sending Patrons to Historical Sites and Museums as part of their Summer Reading Program, "Exercise the Mind"
The Orange Library Association (OLA) announces their 2016 Amazing Orange County Library's Scavenger Hunt, which will run July 5 to August 12, 2016.
OLA's patrons will earn points by visiting Orange County libraries, historic sites, museums, parks, trails, and farmers' markets in the County.
The program is open to all Orange County residents. Teams of one to four persons must include one leader who is a library card holder age 18 and older. Teams or individuals are invited to complete at least 20 of the 30 assigned tasks on the Amazing Orange Libraries game board. Those completing 20 tasks can choose to be entered in to one of three drawings: a $200 Castle Fun Center (Chester) gift card, a $200 Galleria at Crystal Run (Middletown) gift card and a $200 Eisenhower Hall Theater (West Point) gift card.

Dine with Friends of the Seward/ Mapes Homestead

The Seward/Mapes Homestead is pleased to announce that Better Homes & Gardens | Rand Realty has teamed up with Sweet Onion Brewhouse to host its kickoff fundraising event for the Seward/Mapes Homestead restoration project in Florida, NY. The Homestead, site of the birthplace of William Henry Seward, is right across the street from the restaurant.

, Rand Realty's Matt Rand and Mike Vanmansart, from Hudson United, will be guest bartenders. They will graciously be donating all of their tips to the Homestead. Starting at

, a percentage of the evening's dining room earnings will go towards the Homestead's matching grant from New York State. The Homestead's committee is very grateful to Kristen Said, owner of the Brewhouse, for her neighborly generosity.
This evening's fundraiser will feature live music by award-winning vocalist Chloe Borthwick and singer/songwriter Michael Holmes. There will also be a 50/50 and displays, along with the Brewhouse's delicious food, amazing beers and unique cocktails. Your dining experience will support the Seward/Mapes Homestead Restoration Committee in its restoration efforts.

Hamilton on the Hudson
Hamilton on the Hudson is a reoccuring program held by the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society (the AHA Society) to educate about Alexander Hamilton's extensive presence in the Hudson River Valley of New York. Hamilton on the Hudson 2016 will be held at historic sites in the Lower Hudson Valley from Friday, July 15th through to Sunday, July 17th as part of CelebrateHAMILTON 2016.
The first Hamilton on the Hudson program was held in July 2013 in the mid-Hudson Valley to commemorate the 225th anniversary of New York ratifying the US Constitution. Thirteen events were held over a period of three days. Learn more about Hamilton on the Hudson 2013.

Open House at Jacob T. Walden House in Walden
Saturdays, July 16th and August 20 at 1 PM to 3 PM
The house built around 1768 is a fine example of Hudson Valley Dutch Colonial architecture. It is constructed of cut stone and has walls about 2 feet thick, which are indicated by the depth of the window sills. The house is situated on land that was originally part of the Gatehouse patent land grant. It is believed that Samuel Erwin and his heirs enlarged the original home by adding this stone structure to a smaller frame house that no longer exists.
In 1813, wealthy New York City shipping merchant, Jacob Treadwell Walden, purchased a home from the heirs of Samuel Erwin, (during the time the village was called Kidd Town) and moved his family here. He built textile mills powered by the Wallkill River and Falls. He also purchased many plots of land near the falls on both sides of the river. The Jacob T. Walden house is located on North Montgomery Street, out of view but well within earshot of the raging "High Falls." The village was officially renamed for him in 1855.
This stone house is made from local shale and limestone blocks and still has the original Dutch double front door. It became one of the first Walden structures to be proudly named to the New York State and National Register of Historic Places. The Walden House is now the home of the Historical Society of Walden and Wallkill Valley.
We are a totally volunteer, non-profit, and operate almost exclusively on donated funds and memberships.

Trolleys Then and Now: Newburgh, Walden, Middletown, Goshen
Sunday, July 17th 2 PM to 4 PM
Ray Kelly of the O&W Railway Historical Society will talk about the trolley systems of Orange County, a means of transportation that bridged the gap between the horse and machines powered by internal combustion engines.
In this presentation, the audience will take a virtual ride on the trolley between Newburgh and Walden, and then Middletown to Goshen, using photos taken between 1886 and 1925 as well as photos of the present.
Admission is $5 per person. Society Members are free!

The Times Herald-Record reported a disturbing story about a car plowing into the 82 year old Civil War monument at Downing Park, Newburgh. Fortunately, there does not appear to have been any injury to the driver.
The article included a photo of the monument, with its almost 9 foot tall block, and its two marble benches, in pieces.
Our hope is that these pieces will be properly cared for until a decision can be made about the monument's future.
Dedicated in 1934 by the National Daughters of the Union, it was first used as a water fountain. A spokesperson for the Downing Park Planning Committee seemed to think that it was repairable.
As of July 11th the lead role of Eliza Schuyler in the hit Broadway play will be portrayed by Lexi Lawson. Lexi is an Orange County native and a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy.
