    Happy Autumn!

    September Tree
Now that the summer has come to an end, we have fewer outdoor activities and more time for bridge.  There are many events coming up in October which you will find in the newsletter.
I need a photographer(s) for tournaments. Please contact me if you are able to help out with this effort or forward me photos that you would like me to include. Be sure to identify the people photographed.  Please send  feedback and info to
    Lori Lerner ([email protected])

    New Member of Unit 141

    Meet Rui Marques:

I am Portuguese and I started playing bridge circa 1985 at the University of Lisbon while pursuing a Chemical Engineering degree. In 1989, I decided to become a director.   In 1992, I attended the International Tournament Director´s Course promoted by the EBL in Amsterdam, I climbed through the ranks in the EBL and later the WBF and by 2015, I was officially promoted to EBL Chief TD.
Since 2009, I have been sharing my days with a Philadelphia-born player and since 2014 that we are shuttling back and forth between Cascais (a nice, quaint city near Lisbon) and Gladwyne, spending half the time in each side of the Atlantic. We will hopefully be moving full time to Gladwyne in 2015, and I look forward to being an active member of D4 and U141.

Rui will be submitting articles about being a tournament director to the unit newsletter on a regular basis. I am sure we will all find these to be interesting and informative.  Rui hopes to become a director for the ACBL.

    Notes From a Tournament Director

The Thousand Roles of a Tournament Director

The tournament director (TD) is essential at a bridge tournament. He is there to collect entry fees, enforce the rules and regulations applicable, and calculate results. It seems simple enough, and it is. However, the main reason why tournament directing is such a challenging and intellectually rewarding job, the "reason to exist", is that the TD creates value through "proactive customer service". What does this mean? It means that the main focus of the TD is the player. It is of paramount importance that the player enjoys the competition, no matter how tough it is, in a positive, pleasurable and rewarding way. The player is and must be, at all times, the main actor in the game. The player is the "customer", and the TD´s service is to proactively satisfy the needs and solve the problems faced by his "customers". When needed, the TD is the carpenter, the hardware specialist, the software engineer, the counselor, the cleaner, the animator, the negotiator, the maestro... Of course, he is also there to decide when irregularities happen. Did you make an insufficient bid? Lead out of turn? Expose a card? Revoked? Misexplained a bid? Claimed too many or too few tricks? Even if you are sure that you know how to handle it yourself, call the TD, explain the facts and let him handle the situation. If you have any doubts, ask him politely to explain or show you the relevant laws. Also when things go sour and a player at the table behaves in an unacceptable manner, the director must be called immediately. There is no place in a bridge tournament for annoying behavior, embarrassing remarks, or any other conduct which might interfere with the enjoyment of the game.

    Table Tips

Bridge is an extremely enjoyable game.  Courteous behaviour is an exceptionally important part  of that enjoyment.

    • Greet others in a friendly manner prior to start of play on  each round. ·
    • Be a good "host" or "guest" at the table. ·
    • Make your convention card readily available to your  opponents and fill it  out completely. ·
    • Make bridge enjoyable for yourself,  partner and opponents. ·
    • Give credit when opponents make a good bid or play. ·
    • Take care of your personal grooming. ·
    • Ensure that your mobile phone is turned off. ·
    • Enjoy the company as well as the game.
