 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
President's Message
Ellen Onstad CSI, CDT, Chapter President

I've known many of the members for many years - I love looking thru the membership lists to see who is currently listed. What company they are with and how long they have been a member. Please make sure this information is correct. To do that contact CSI National or Lee Kilbourn and he can walk you through corrections. The membership committee also uses this information to remind members to renew, and invite members to join committees or attend special events.

As we begin this new year of Portland Chapter CSI, its important to also look back. We have accomplished much these last few years. The recession was difficult on the construction industry, organizations like ours specifically. Membership as a whole has decreased but Portland Chapter  has held its own at approximately 270 members. We have a healthy mix of architects, specifiers, contractors, engineers and product representatives. Thank you all for maintaining your membership.

It's also important for us to look forward. Our committees are always looking for new members. If you didn't receive information at new member orientation or its been a few years, please look at our Portland chapter website and review the options available for joining committees.

More information will be forthcoming after the annual board retreat. Looking forward to fresh ideas and new perspectives. Thank you everyone who has agreed to be on the board or act as a committee chair.

Let the Golfing Begin
Erica Bitterman-Ryon, Golf Committee Chair

golf2.jpg This year's Annual CSI Golf Tournament Is August 25th at Lewis River Golf Club. It will be a 12:30 shot gun start. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, KP, LD, Longest Putt and Straight Drive and of course team that tries the hardest. There will be Raffle tickets sold as well for some great prizes donated by our sponsors.

The CSI Annual Golf Tournament is a fund raising event for our Scholarships. Scholarships are given out for those that want to further their education in the AEC industry by taking the CDT Exam or next level exams. Your sponsorship and participation in this event allows CSI to help members in the AEC Industry and those emerging professionals that someday may be working with us in this wild and crazy industry. Please help make this year a success and participate in the golf tournament. You don't have to be a pro to play, just have to know how to have fun.  If you are just not a golfer in any way shape or form, you can be a sponsor and help that way. Come out and network, man a tee box, play games and give out prizes. You can also donate Raffle Prizes for after dinner.  Got some Swag you wanna get out there to help promote your firm? This is the perfect chance to do so.

It's a lot of fun! You're out of the office in the sun networking, laughing, and enjoying the day. HOW AWESOME IS THAT!
Annual Chili Cook-Off & Awards Ceremony Recap
Alicia Clark, CSI-EP, Program Committee Chair

The Chili Cook-Off was a huge success! Congratulations to Team Chili Chili Bang Bang (sponsored by Pacific Mat) for winning both Best Chili and People's Choice! Also, congratulations to Team Holiday Mash Up (sponsored by WindowTech) for winning Best Theme! They had everyone laughing with their creative holiday character mash-ups.

We had six great chilis, and we appreciate everyone that came out to taste them all. I also want to thank our event sponsors Tao Group and Boral for helping to support this event and keep the cost down for people to attend. This is a fun event with a great opportunity for networking, so start planning your chili recipes for next year.

Law in Design and Construction: Who's at Risk?
Design and Construction can be a contentious industry. Construction Defect, digital documents, project warranties, can all bring up lots of questions about the correct way to do things, and the actual way things get done. Come ask your questions to our panel of experts.

 EDUCATION
Learning & Libations Year in Review
Jake LaManna, CSI-EP, CDT, Education Chair

In 2016, several new features to our educational offerings have been experimentally introduced. First, we rebranded ourselves as the pdxCSI Learning & Libations Series. We are still a place to get beer, pizza, and learning. Now we have a catchy title to announce that fact.

Next, we experimented with new program offerings. These included a "Season of Technology" where we've explored the available technologies out there for enhancing project delivery and communication. We have tested out offering semi-monthly L&L Tours, one given by Andersen Construction of the Cosmopolitan condo tower being built in the Pearl District and another given by the Willamette Falls Legacy Project, to explore the future Riverwalk development site at the Willamette Falls in Oregon City.

Still further, we are exploring offering an annual symposium, covering in depth the coordination and core competencies required to execute the design and construction of complex assemblies. Our first experiment in this type of educational offering is being spearheaded by the Kraken herself, Cherise Schacter, and we look forward to sharing that event with you on August 26th and 27th at Walsh Construction.

New ideas are still being worked on and theorized.  The year isn't over yet, and there are many innovative tours and lectures coming up in the Fall.
