    Busy June

Boat and Balloon Here is a reminder of the great Unit 141 events coming in June. It's a silver and gold point-palooza!

For silver points, Intermediate and Newcomer players have a dedicated Swiss-Teams sectional on June 2 as well as a split-site sectional June 16 and 17. Read on below for more details. [Note: June 2 is SOLD OUT - others are still open! - ed.]

Then it's gold points for players of all levels when Unit 141 hosts the Philadelphia Regional at Valley Forge (June 22-28). With a completely revised schedule that is chock-full of new events, there's something for everybody. Use the link Upcoming Events to read the event flyer, the full schedule, and more. The first article below continues our ongoing series about the Regional. We look forward to seeing you there!

Philadelphia Regional: Big Changes Part 4

The Philadelphia Regional at Valley Forge (June 22-28) is just a few weeks away. In this series of article, we've already talked about general changes, upgrades to the schedule, hospitality, and special features . This month, it's logistics -- a few key wheres, hows, and whens of the tournament.

    1. Note that morning game time is 10:30 AM.

    2. A free continental breakfast will be served each day (except Monday) from the hotel restaurant T. Burke's. The free Saturday and Sunday lunches will be served from both hotel restaurants -- T. Burke's and Three01. On Monday to Friday, players can buy lunch from a concession stand or in T. Burke's restaurant. There are also plenty of good options out of the hotel. A restaurant guide is available at the District 4 website (now) and in printed form at the tournament.

    3. The daily lecture series takes place in the Hamilton Room on the lower level of the hotel.

    4. All knockouts will be played on the second floor. The entries for knockouts will be sold there as well. Access to the second floor is via the elevator bank by the check-in desk or the main stairwell in the lobby.

    5. Most pairs events and Swiss Teams will be held in the Grand Ballroom. Entries for these events will be sold in the "Piazza," the lobby just outside the ballroom.  All information stations, including registration and the partnership desk, can be found there as well.

    6. The bridge rate for rooms at the DoubleTree has expired because we are oversold on reservations. If you have any questions or concerns about hotel reservations or need help figuring out where to stay, contact Allison Brandt at [email protected] or 215-834-5944.

Have more questions? Pick up a Welcome Bulletin at the Information Desk. It will contain detailed information about the tournament, including a complete schedule and restaurant guide. In addition, look for volunteers wearing an "Ask Me!" badge. They can answer questions about tournament logistics and get you where you're going.

    Four Sectional Tournaments
    Set for I/N Players

Intermediate and Newcomer players have many options for sectionals, many of which take place in the next two months.

First note that the June 2 event has SOLD OUT, but there are plenty of other great alternatives!

Additional Sectional Teams tournaments take place on Monday July 27 and Tuesday October 20. All of those events are limited to players with fewer than 500 masterpoints. They are two-sessions and award silver points. For questions or to register, contact I/N tournament chair Bruce Lang at [email protected]. For more information, click these links to the tournament flyers: July 27, October 20.

Don't wait until July where you have a great option in June! There is a split-site Sectional on Tuesday June 16 and Wednesday June 17. You can play on either one or both of the two days. Both events start at 10 AM.

The first day is a Non-Life Master pairs event at Pine Run (777 Ferry Rd, Doyletown). It is a stratified event for players in brackets 0-20 newcomer, 0-100, 100-200, and >200. The event benefits The National Parkinson Foundation, costs $20/pair, and requires preregistration. Contact Jane Ball ([email protected]) with questions or to register.

The second day takes place at Raffles for Bridge (3901 Conshohocken Ave, Philadelphia) and is a stratified NLM Swiss Teams event. The cost for this event is $90/team and preregistration is also required. For more information or to register, contact Wendy de Chadarevian at [email protected].

Unit 141 Sectional Stars on Bridge Winners

If you think that Unit 141 Sectionals are just a local affair, think again. You might have noticed that in the past year alone, Bala has been attended by many national stars, including Kevin Dwyer and Shannon Cappelletti. In April, Oren Kriegel not only spent the weekend playing at Bala, but had such an enjoyable time that he wrote about it on the premiere bridge website, Bridge Winners.

You can read Oren's article about his experience at the Unit 141 Sectional, including several really interesting hands he played that weekend by clicking this link or visiting the Bridge Winners website (www.bridgewinners.com) and searching for articles by Oren.

    Table Tips: Time-Saving Tips

Here are a few tips you can use to save precious time at the table that can be used for important things like thinking about the hand!

    1. Don't postmortem the hands at the table, but save your discussion until after the game. Use the time between hands to sort your cards, record results, and prepare to bid.

    2. Lead first before you do any housekeeping, such as recording the contract on a personal scoresheet. Getting the lead on the table moves the hand along for everyone.

    3. Try to avoid creating director calls by promptly alerting partner's bids, knowing your agreements, bidding in turn, etc.

    4. Consider your rebid when you make your opening bid. Thinking about the whole hand at once saves time -- and usually leads to better bidding results too.
