Reserve a Spot for SHOT!
The Salmon Hawg Open Tournament (SHOT) will be October 13 -15 at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds. The fishing will take place in the surrounding rivers, bays, and ocean! The Northwest Steelheaders and event sponsors invite you to join in the fun.
The event includes participant commemorative gifts, two great dinners, and up-to-the-minute fishing report, a Tillamook specific fishing seminar, snacks and beverages, awards, and prizes for all participants. Get a couple of your fishing buddies together and join us to celebrate one of the best fall fisheries in the northwest.
SHOT and its sponsors have generated over $7,500 dedicated to improving sport fishing in Tillamook County. This includes improved fishing access, habitat restoration, and angler education. You will be accomplishing much more than just having a great time.

Who Should be Added to the Hall of Fame?
Hall of Fame Celebrity and Foot Soldier Awards and the Member of the Year award will be presented at the HOF Banquet in November. Any member can nominate someone for HOF (lifetime achievement - does not need to be a member) and Member of the Year (dedicated volunteer member). You can get the nomination forms (either a .doc or a .pdf file) from

. Nominations must be received by July 25th (via e-mail attachment or hard copy mailed to ANWS HOF Nomination, 6641 SE Lake Rd., Milwaukie OR 97222. The winners will be selected July 30th at the Annual Meeting by board members and chapter delegates.

A small group of dedicated anglers ignored the attractions of the many Free Fishing Weekend events to participate in the Sandy River Spring Chinook Classic Saturday, June 4. The Columbia River was open, but the sun was so hot and bright that anglers checked in with signs of lots of sun. Leo Martel won both First Place and the Big Fish award.

ODFW Wants to Hear From You!
The Draft Forage Fish Management Plan is now open for public comment! These little fish are a big deal! Our salmon, steelhead and other sport fish depend on them.
Many of Oregon's forage fish species are fished in other parts of the world, but not yet off the Oregon coast. The Forage Fish Management Plan will prohibit commercial fishing on several currently unfished forage species in Oregon state waters unless and until the science shows that such fishing could be done without harming existing fisheries or the greater ecosystem.
Add your voice in support of this important plan to protect the food for our fisheries, whales, and seabirds. Sign the public comment letter here.

Managing Water Resources
The Oregon Water Resources Department is soliciting public comments on how best to manage Oregon's water resources.
This information will be used to update the Oregon Integrated Water Resources Strategy, originally created in 2012.
Comments are due by July 15th
at the Oregon Water Resources Dept.
This is an opportunity for us to ask for water rights for fish.
WaterWatch, a non-profit group dedicated to protecting natural flows in Oregon's Rivers, was involved in shaping the first strategy. They have some additional suggestions for needed updates to the strategy.
1. Set goals for new instream water rights, especially for fish.
2. Quantify future instream flow needs--include water needs for fish, wildlife, water quality, and recreation.
3. Measure Water Diversions in order to manage them.
4. Drought resiliency for rivers--
Oregon's existing drought laws do nothing to protect rivers and fish. The new strategy should require development of drought provisions which protect flows for fish and wildlife, and set minimum flows on ecologically significant streams.
5. Improve water use efficiency--regulate wasteful water use.

Oregon Coastal Values Survey
A Portland State University research team is conducting the Oregon Coastal Values Survey to understand how residents use and value the coast and ocean. The survey asks about opinions on marine management activities, and preferences for future management. The survey also includes an online mapping activity, allowing those who take the survey to indicate places on the coast that are important to them, and to recommend changes in management of areas. This includes coastal streams and watersheds.
The goal of the survey is to reach a broad set of adult residents who have lived in Oregon for a year or more. Access the survey
