Diane Smith will be covering Alternative credit options, Badging, and Collaboration, great for middle & high school programs looking to capitalize on the extra curricular opportunities offered in your community. This 3 Hour training will be offered August-October at five different locations.

National Conference on Afterschool & Summer
The National Summer Learning Association joins School's Out Washington to present, Dare to Disrupt! The Pathway to Excellence and Equity in Education, October 24-26 in Seattle, Washington. This three-day national convening will bring together the nation's top thinkers to share and discuss the partnerships, policies and programs that are breaking down traditional notions of when and where learning occurs. Registration rates go up July 1st.

Salem's
Summer Learning Block Party
On June 27th, nearly 1000 local children, parents, grandparents and summer program providers gathered at the Gilbert House Children's Museum to celebrate Summer Learning. Oregon State Senator Mark Hass,
National Summer Learning Association Board Chair Matthew Boulay, and
Oregon State Librarian Mary Kay Dahlgreen each shared a few words to help kick off the party, and a representative from Senator Wyden's office read his proclamation of support for summer learning.
Throughout the day, community partners hosted activity tables in the parking lot, popcorn, ice cream and food carts fed the hungry masses, children picked out free books to take home, and all
participants were
able to explore the museum for free.

Summer Learning, Summer Library, Summer Lunch
We are thrilled to have nearly 20 schools participating in our SL3 program this year. As part of SL3, school libraries will be open to all youth at least one day each week before or after the school has free lunch. Sites are encouraged to provide additional activities in the library or connect with other partners providing summer learning opportunities.

Words of Wisdom of Oregon's
2016 Superintendent of the Year
Heidi Sipe was recognized this year by the Oregon Association of School Executives (OASE) and the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators (COSA)as the Oregon Superintendent of the Year. Umatilla School District is a diverse, economically challenged district. But Heidi is as committed as ever to living the district's motto, "Building Bridges to Successful Futures."
In a recent video released by COSA of Heidi, she mentions "My goal is to make sure that our students and our teachers and our staff have the resources they need to make students succeed. That is what I do, try to open doors for kids." And one key to that success is one of the most active afterschool programs in the state.

Computer Science Symposium
The Oregon Computer Science Teachers Association (OCSTA) hosted a symposium on June 25th as part of their work on the Oregon Digital Promise Grant. Nearly 80 individuals from schools, industry, post-secondary and community based organizations gathered at the symposium to hear more about current efforts to increase access to computer science education in Oregon. We were also thrilled to be joined by Ruthe Farmer, current White House Senior Policy Advisor for Tech Inclusio
n. Ruthe shared about the
CSforAll Campaign
a

well as several other funding opportunities that could support the expansion or inclusion of Computer Science education in more programs around Oregon.
