Action Needed: Support GSA Effort by July 14

The Genetics Society of America (GSA) is asking for signatures of support to encourage NIH leadership to reconsider their plan to create a single Model Organism Database (MOD) from the Mouse Genome Database (MGD) and the existing MOD.  While integration will increase accessibility of the functional data that each community has collected, the current plan with its reduced funding (30% cut) will have a severe impact on the ability of MGD to maintain mouse-specific datasets. To learn more and sign the petition click, here. Action is needed before July 14 as the letter will be presented to NIH Director, Dr. Francis Collins, during The Allied Genetics Conference.

August Webinar Tackles Mouse Euthanasia

Plans to attend the Tuesday, August 23 webinar, " Mouse Euthanasia: A Critical Review of Current Practice," from 12:00-1:30 p.m. CT. Mouse euthanasia with carbon dioxide remains a hot topic and generated much discussion recently on Compmed. Do the data support the euthanasia guidelines for administering CO2? What rate of administration is most humane? What about other common methods for euthanasia of mice - are these more humane? Better for research purposes? Dr. Greg Boivin, DVM, MS, MBA, DACLAM, will sum up the research he and others have conducted in this area, focusing mainly on CO2 euthanasia and comparing it to other common methods. Attendees will get a good grasp of the issues and an understanding of the questions which remain to be answered.
