 Parke Wright III Award
T ake a look back at past Parke Wright III Award recipients as we countdown to the 2016 reveal ...

ChairsMessageChair's Message
Summer greetings to everyone.  Most folks are taking a vacation, staycation or some other form of hiatus this time of year and LTA is no different.  There are no formal LTA events in July but we have a very strong line-up of programs for the second half of the year.

Kicking us off on August 4 will be a panel discussion about what is going on in Tampa in the world of startup companies. Technology has helped provide new opportunities for ambitious would-be business owners to make that leap of faith and start their own companies.  Tampa Bay is starting to be mentioned in the same conversations as Austin, Nashville, Boston and other cities as hotbeds for entrepreneurs with talent and great ideas, AND for having the community support system to give those risk-takers what they need to be successful. The City of Tampa, and the Bay Area as a whole have been working hard to try to keep these talented people and their ideas here in Tampa (one of our mayor's favorite topics), and that hard work is paying off. The panel will include two local young entrepreneurs who will share their stories and give some insights into where aspiring start-ups can go for help with their business ideas, and we will have two panelists who spend much of their time providing that help. Join us on August 4 at 5:30 p.m. for networking and cocktails, and learn about what is going on in the world of entrepreneurs and start-ups in Tampa.  The event is being held at the brand new Lowth Entrepreneurship Center on the campus of the University of Tampa.  If you have not had a chance to see this very impressive addition to UT and downtown, this will be a great opportunity to do so.  Some informal tours will be available.  Please sign up now and get this on your calendar. Seating is limited.

Also, our Membership Committee will be doing a July membership blitz to bring additional LTA members on board to participate in our programming for the second half of the year. If you have classmates who may not have joined or renewed their membership to LTA in 2016, it is not too late. They can go to the LTA website and sign up in moments, and can then enjoy all the great events we have planned for the rest of the year - the August entrepreneurship event, Conversations with Influence featuring the new president of the Tampa Bay Lightning (at the Zoo), LTA Reunion 2016 and much more.  Help us build membership, and do a favor for your LT mates who have been missing out.

Finally, as a reminder, the LTA Annual Review for 2015 is available.  It is full of good information and the look, design and content of the report is the best it has ever been. A lot of hours were put into making the report pretty remarkable. A lot of credit has to go to Chappell Roberts for LTA being able to publish a report of the highest quality.  Thanks to this year's LTA Vice Chair, Christine Turner and her team for all their hard work in helping us produce this impressive report.

I hope everyone is having a great summer.  We'll see you August 4 at our next LTA event.

Best regards,

Reid

LT Alum Creates Popular Leadership Program
  by Kerry O'Reilly

Jeremy Daniel
CFO Regenerative Medical Solutions
LT '15 Alumni

RMS Amplify at Camelback Mountain

In 2015, Jeremy Daniel (LT '15) CFO of Regenerative Medical Solutions created a leadership program for select employees. The program is called RMS Amplify and the mission is to find and train the next generation of leaders in their company.

The program lasts for 13 weeks and is limited to six members per class. Members must apply and be accepted to participate. The group meets Tuesday mornings from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Q: Tell us about the RMS Amplify program.
A: Each member of the class is given a Kindle, a journal and a workbook. We do not allow laptops or phones in the meetings as this distracts from the class. We read books on leadership, have guest speakers and participate in group activities throughout the class.

Q: I understand you do something special at the end of the program.
A: During the final week of the program, we take everyone who has participated in the class on a four-day, three-night retreat where we visit our clinic in Scottsdale and hike Camelback Mountain as a team to represent how far we have come as a class.

We then fly to the team out to Vegas for two days where we visit Zappos and learn about their company culture and what makes them so successful.

Q: Have you retained the people you've trained, and have you seen the benefit of the training in your workplace?
A: Yes, four of the participants been promoted to management or have become directors of their respective departments. They are true advocates for our overall corporate mission and values. We are currently accepting applications for next year.

Q: What inspired you to create the program?
A: We are a very young company with around 75% of our corporate staff being a part of the millennial generation. We have found that members of this generation are looking for opportunities to grow and want to be rewarded with either promotions or salary increases. As a smaller company in the growth stage, we knew we could not increase our human capital expense but we did want to keep our high performers engaged.

Q: Do you have other facilitators besides yourself?
A: The class is taught by three of the executives of the company.

Q: What's been the biggest surprise?
A: The biggest surprise has been the confidence gained by graduating members. I am a big believer that if you invest time in others, you will be shocked at what they can accomplish.

Why Are You Engaged in LTA?

Leadership Tampa Alumni has been a source of friendship, business relationships and community engagement. Opportunities to grow as a professional through leadership roles within the organization have further enhanced the experience for me.

What Do You Enjoy Most About LTA?

Meeting new people; the wonderful events; maintaining relationships with those I have gotten to know over the years.  I have loved being a mentor through the Emerge program. The Emerge members with whom I have become acquainted are very bright and focused. I also enjoy the way other LTA members encourage and support one another while pushing you to new heights you never dreamt you could achieve.

What Do You Get Out of LTA?

A network of smart, strategic people who are a resource for insight and advice and fun. I also enjoy the chance to meet so many people from diverse career paths who are at different stages in their lives: those just starting out, those mid-career and those who are senior in their fields. Getting involved, chairing the LTA membership committee, nominating a Parke Wright III award recipient, being LT '91's central communications member - all have contributed to the richness of the experience for me.

How Has LTA Helped You Most?

By constantly challenging me to find new ways to be involved with our community. My classmates in LT '91 are a true resource of friendship, encouragement and support. Through good times, and those times that are not so good, they have been stalwart and loyal. To have a group of people you know you can call on without hesitation - that means so much. And this is not limited to my LT '91 classmates; there are so many other LTA members who are also in that category of people who have been there for me.

Anything Else You'd like to Add about LTA?

The people in LTA are the heart of the organization. Not only do I cherish my relationships with my LT '91 classmates, but some of the most meaningful relationships I have developed have come about as a direct result of my involvement in LTA. Like everything else, you get out of an experience what you commit to put into it; LTA is an important part of my life, my friends, and my work.  Because of my twenty-five year affiliation with LTA I have become a more competent leader, a more skilled professional and created relationships that will last a lifetime.

Captain John C. Timmel, was recognized with the 2013 Parke Wright III Leadership Award at the LTA annual meeting on January 16, 2014.

"The Parke Wright III award is the most prestigious honor that a member of Leadership Tampa Alumni can achieve," said Troy Atlas, 2014 Chair of LTA.  "His visionary leadership in his business, his industry and Leadership Tampa has elevated our community."
