MFGA's Aquanty Project receives AAFC ARI funding
Recent flood events in the Assiniboine River Basin have resulted in significant crop losses, property and infrastructure damage, leading to unprecedented Agri-Recovery claims above and beyond crop insurance. The Aquanty Project, which MFGA is excited to be a part of, seeks to develop new risk management tools to reduce the impact of extreme flood or drought events for the agricultural industry within the Basin by identifying preventative measures, implementing risk prevention and mitigation activities, all with the intention of lessening the need for government disaster programming in response to such events.

Congratulations to MBFI, Winner of Province Partnership Award

The accomplishments of Manitoba government employees and the outstanding contributions they have made to the public service are recognized each year. This year, the Manitoba Beef and Forage Initiatives (MBFI) was saluted for excellence within the Mb government ranks at the recent 18th Annual Manitoba Service Excellence Awards. MFGA along with partners Manitoba Agriculture, Manitoba Beef Producers and Ducks Unlimited won the partnership award, the largest category (7 excellent nominees).

The annual Manitoba Agriculture and MFGA event was held for the first time at the Manitoba Beef and Forage Initiative's (MBFI)
Brookdale site. The 2016 Hay Day attracted approximately 120 producers throughout the day and focused on how to produce top-quality hay every season. Featuring extension specialists from across the province, the day offered both field demonstrations and classroom presentations on a range of topics.
MBFI is a centre of agricultural innovation engaging in science-based research to benefit valuable ecosystems, improve producer profitibility and build social social awareness around the beef/forage industry. Learn about MBFI.

Produce Better Quality Forage at Lower Cost
Two important parts of a self-propelled forage harvester are the knives and shear bar.
They are the "scissors" of the machine in that if the knives or the shearbar are dull, or if there's improper alignment of the knives and the shearbar, you'll need more power to do the job and the cut will become ragged and uneven. The knives should be sharp so that when they come down to the shearbar, they take as little power as possible to cut the crop and help reduce shearbar wear. The shearbar plays an important part, too. If it has a nice, square edge on it, then the knives will be able to cut through the crop more easily.

Designed to refine the diagnostic skills of agronomists and producers involved in field scouting and assessing crop health, this event has been running since 1996 with approximately 400-500 people attending each year.
