City of Birmingham, MI
New Parking Standards to be Implemented on Hamilton Avenue
The road, sewer and water line upgrades on Hamilton Avenue have been completed and the road is now reopened.  The final elements, which include parking meter installation, will be conducted the week of July 11th.

The reconstruction of this road requires compliance with new regulations under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) to provide reserved accessible parking spaces on the street at a ratio of one marked accessible space for every 25 spaces on the block.  As a result, Hamilton Avenue will be the first street to receive reserved accessible parking spaces. Under this new requirement, 3 new reserved accessible parking spaces will be installed on Hamilton Avenue. These spaces will be marked using ADA compliant signage, blue paint on the parking meter and post, as well as, blue pavement markings.  The parking meter will be lower than the standard meter height to allow access to all users.

The new reserved accessible parking spaces will also be subject to the City's new parking standards.  This involves these new metered spaces to be enforced the same as other designated parking spaces located downtown.  Drivers using these spaces will be expected to display their valid disabled parking permit.

On Hamilton Avenue, drivers with these permits will no longer be able to park for free at on-street meters unless they display a disabled parking permit with a valid yellow sticker. Unlike reserved accessible parking in most lots, standard parking fees at the accessible meters will apply. A time limit will also apply. The reserved accessible parking meters will permit a stay of up to 2 hours rather than the standard 1 hour limit. Additionally, the yellow curb is designated as a no parking zone and will no longer be available for disabled accessible parking on Hamilton Avenue as designated disabled accessible parking spaces have been added.

The remainder of the Central Business District is expected to have reserved accessible parking spaces added later this year. There are approximately 60 dedicated accessible spaces planned to be added throughout the downtown as a result of these new requirements.
