Market Updates
Vendor News
----------------------
A few rainy days have returned to Portland, but that won't keep 50 of Portland's finest farmers, ranchers, foragers and food and drink makers away from the Hollywood Farmers
Market. Blueberries, blackberries and peaches are the fruits of the week, and it's finally time to tomato your life up, with the addition of your fresh herb of choice of course!

Gales Meadow Farm returns this week with beautiful garlic b ulbs ready for curing for storage, and if you missed Kiyokawa Family Orchards season debut last week then make sure you get your hands on some delicious organic Parkdale grown cherries this
week.

Swarm Portland  will be buzzing into market this weekend
w ith honeycombed shaped garden boxes, educational Bee Guides and their mission of making Portland a bee sanctuary by building worlds of pollinator habitat yard by yard.

We'll also have Dragonfly Forge sharpening blades all day long, and Thomas & Sons Distillery  back for the week.

Senior Day this Saturday!
----------------------
This Saturday senior citizens are in season, for our annual Senior Day! Seniors 65 and older can stop by the information booth on this day and pick up coupons for 20% off their purchases at Hollywood Farmers Market that day. They can also enter a free drawing to win a free basket of farmers market goodies! The Hollywood Senior Center will have an informational booth at the market with information about resources and activities for seniors. And just to give a shout-out to a hugely successful program for the benefit of seniors, the Neighborhood Gleaners are still going strong, collecting unused produce after each farmers market and distributing it to seniors in need! See the article below for more info.

Hancock Street Painting postponed to July 17th!

Due to persistent rain in the weather forecast, we've postponed our Hancock Street mural painting to the following Sunday, July 17th. Same time, same place!

Hollywood Farmers Market seeks board members
----------------------
The Hollywood Farmers Market is now accepting applications to join its Board of Directors in January 2017! Board membership is a terrific opportunity for volunteers, vendors and market lovers to become involved with this successful nonprofit farmers market. The Board welcomes applications from individuals enthusiastic about the Market, and especially those with backgrounds in the areas of community outreach, agriculture, communications, account/financial planning, human resources and marketing. The application can be found on our website here.

See you Saturday at the market!
Neighborhood Gleaners get fresh produce to Seniors!
Strolling through the market, you may have noticed a group of people wandering around in black aprons chatting with vendors. You may also have seen them enjoying some of the delightful cooked fare at the tables. What you probably haven't seen is that group in action.

The group is called the Neighborhood Gleaners, and they are a group of volunteers who collect unsold food and produce from the market. All food that is collected is distributed to low income seniors in the neighborhood through a partnership between the Hollywood Senior Center and the Hollywood Farmers Market.

Hollywood Gleaners began in 2011, to address the increasing need for seniors to gain access to high quality food that would otherwise be unaffordable. Through careful brainstorming between all of the involved groups, it was decided that the program would need to address hunger for both cooking and non-cooking seniors, to be able to handle large amounts of food with as little waste as possible, and to be designed for ultimate sustainability. Those goals still define the project.

Since May of 2011, Gleaners have collected tens of thousands of pounds of food for seniors. In addition to distributing food directly to people in need, volunteers freeze or preserve food that otherwise wouldn't make it from Saturday until Monday without spoiling. One November found volunteers using vegetable scraps for broth and frozen vegetables and sausages for soup that was served to the seniors for their Thanksgiving meal. A group of college volunteers created a mixed fruit jam from one summer's frozen fruit. Waste not, want not!

The Gleaners have seen great success in their mission, but are still looking for more help. Specifically, they need volunteers for Monday morning, to help with the produce distribution at the Senior Center. They also would love some help with more programmatic aspects, like marketing and fundraising. And if you have any reusable bags that you don't need, they are always needed by the Gleaners. You can contact Heather at gleaners@hollywoodseniorcenter.org, and you can bring reusable bags to the HFM information booth.
