ROXBURY SCHOOLS IN THE NEWS

Sarah Richman, Roxbury Field Hockey Evangelist

In hopes of increasing local interest in field hockey by exposing girls to it at a young age, Roxbury High School rising senior Sarah Richman hosted an instructional clinic at the school recently.

At Richman's recent clinic, girls in grades five through eight learned fundamentals of playing field hockey and the rules of the sport while running some mini-games meant to hone their skills, according to a recent press release.

Richman organized the clinic for her Girl Scout Gold Award project, and had some of her high school teammates help demonstrate and explain drills. She was very happy with the results of the camp.

Her next step is to contact Roxbury Recreation Director Keith Knudsen to check on the feasibility of starting a field hockey recreation program in Roxbury that could influence more girls to opt for playing the sport in high school.

Richman can be reached at srichman17@roxbury.org for more information on field hockey.

The event will be held at Horseshoe Lake Park and include a welcome rally, kids dash and one or two mile walk on a picturesque course that winds around baseball fields and Horseshow Lake. To register, visit   www.freetobreathe.org/get-involved/northernnj.

Online registration before September 28th is $25 and participants can register as individuals or as a team. Lake Foundation Sponsors 'Shop Local' Campaign
For the fourth year in a row, The Lake Hopatcong Foundation, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, is supporting area businesses with its "Shop Local Lake Hopatcong" campaign.

The foundation's intent is that the residents will view the four towns surrounding the lake as their "local downtown" and, by shopping and partaking of the services available, will help keep it a vibrant part of the economy.

Beginning this Friday, July 1, anyone who shops local, takes a picture and posts it on social media with #shoplocallakehopatcong will automatically be entered to win lake prizes, including floating tubes and rafts. Interested parties should follow the Lake Hopatcong Foundation's social media pages for full participation in the event: Facebook (LakeHopatcongFoundation), Twitter (@thisisyourlake), Instagram (LakeHopatcong) and Pinterest (LakeHopatcong).

This year the Lake Hopatcong Foundation is using Woobox, an app that automatically gathers up all the social media posts using #shoplocallakehopatcong from midnight on July 1 to 11:59 p.m. on July 31 and will generate the random winners of the lake prizes. LHF's direct link for Woobox is http://woobox.com/yjokmd.
