A Cup of Encouragement

While attending a retreat with Fr. Brennan Manning, he asked those of us in the room if we were "happy". We answered out loud with a positive, yet sheepish, "yes". His response was, "Well, notify your face!"
As I reflect back on his reply, I realized that we don't hear a lot about Joy today, especially when we watch or listen to the evening news.
However, in the midst of all of that gloom, we are told that Jesus offers us Joy, in fact according to Galatians 5:22 "Joy" is one of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit that we received at Confirmation.
While in quiet prayer I asked myself why I don't share my Joy in Christ with others more often? That question caused me to take a "Joy Inventory" by asking myself: "Who and what gives me Joy?"
I was astonished by my list which brought a big smile to my face and heart, prompting me to share Joy with others.
Let me encourage you to do the same: pray and ask the Holy Spirit, who and what makes you Joyful?  Write down your answers, then share them with others and watch as your answers notify their faces and yours!
I encourage you to go to:  Som Sabadell flashmob - BANCO SABADELL - YouTube ,  Watch what happens when they share their gifts.  Do the same for others with the gifts given to you by the Holy Spirit, with Joy.

The angel Gabriel was sent from God and spoke to Mary - "The Holy Spirit will come upon you  and the power of the most high will overshadow you.  Therefore the child to be born will  be called holy, the son of God."
And Mary said,  "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according  to your word."

The Women's Guild would like to thank all who were involved in making this year's rummage sale a huge success.  Starting with the local merchants who graciously donated items for our raffle baskets, the Knights of Columbus who set up the school gym with more tables then were ever needed before due to the over abundant generosity of our parishioners, to our shoppers for their many purchases, to the husbands of our members for their help, patience and support, and, finally, to the members of the Guild who tirelessly spent endless hours collecting, pricing and selling all of the donated treasures.

MEET the MADDOCKS - OUR FAMILY of the MONTH!
A love for God, family, and their fellow man is at the heart of our parishioner "Family of the Month."  Matt and Lisa Maddock decided to move from New Hampshire to Hendersonville, North Carolina with their children, Joe and Jane, in 2006, after visiting Matt's parents during the winter here in Hendersonville.
"When we made the decision to move to Hendersonville," explains Matt, "my mother had been ill and we wanted Joe and Jane to spend more time with her. The winter in North Carolina was so mild in comparison to winters in New Hampshire that it made our decision to relocate easier!"
Working in Nuclear Medicine doing PET scans with a mobile imaging company, Matt was able to transfer with his company to the Hendersonville area. Because it was a mobile unit, Matt was traveling a lot, and missing prime time with his family, including celebrating Sunday Masses together. "I decided spending time with my family was more important to me than the job, so I found a position at Mission Hospital so I could spend more time at home, and attend Mass as a family."
Attending Mass together as a family, and being an integral part of the Mass is evidenced by their weekly participation. "Matt and Lisa are regular servers at the 7:30 AM liturgy," Lisa says proudly, "and Matt and I are Sacristans and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist." Being so closely involved in the Mass "has helped all of us appreciate our faith and the liturgy so much more," she continued.
"Mass is that much more meaningful to all of us," Matt adds. "I was raised Catholic in a military family," he went on, "and because we moved around so much,  we attended several Catholic churches. We never had a parish where we had such a sense of belonging."  But, when Matt's parents, Linda and Joseph, moved to Hendersonville, "My Dad realized Immaculate Conception was a parish with the Capuchin Franciscans, and that was it. My uncle is a Capuchin Franciscan so Mom and Dad immediately felt a part of the parish."
A convert before their marriage, Lisa has found that learning to be a Sacristan and a Eucharistic Minister has given her a fuller understanding of the Catholic Faith. "I enjoy being actively involved at Mass and meeting other parishioners who participate in the liturgy with us," she explains.
Lisa was a stay-at-home Mom until Jane started school at Immaculata in 2011. The preschool needed an after school teacher and she stepped in to help. She enjoyed working with the young children so much, she went back to school and took the needed early childhood classes to become a lead teacher. When one of the lead teachers retired, "I was ready for the opportunity to become the lead teacher of the four year olds, she says with a smile. "I love working with the young children - they're so eager to learn!" Lisa herself is eager to learn this summer as she attended a week long class in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd here at the parish. Joe, a junior at Hendersonville High School graduated from Immaculata. "I didn't start there until I was in 6th grade," he said, "but I felt a part of the school right away." Joe is involved in soccer, track, and is a member of the Kiwanis Club, and the U.S. Navy Sea Cadets. "My goal is to attend the Naval Academy and this is good experience for me," he relates.
Joe's sister, Jane, is a seventh grader at Immaculata and went to Washington, D.C. last month with her family to participate in the National History Day Competition. An avid reader, Jane says, "I like to read mysteries and fantasy books, just about everything!" She also plays soccer.
The whole family agrees that sending Joe and Jane to school at Immaculata has made an enormously positive impact on all their lives. "Our children are so well prepared for future educational challenges, and our family's faith has grown so much being a part of the school," Lisa shared.
As a family they like to spend a lot of time together. They enjoy spending time outdoors hiking, biking, camping, walking with their dog, Otto, and visiting the beach.

Centering Prayer
The practice of Centering Prayer is based on the teaching of Jesus to "go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret" (Matthew 6:6).  As taught by Fr. Thomas Keating and Fr Basil Pennington (both Catholic priests), Centering Prayer combines both the contemplative prayer tradition of the ancient desert fathers and mothers, with the contemporary principles of psychological and neurological science.
The focus of Centering Prayer is the deepening of our intimate relationship with the living, risen Jesus in union with God the Father through the action of the Holy Spirit.  This method of prayer is designed to prepare our minds and hearts (our whole being) to receive the gift of contemplation from God.  St. Gregory the Great (6 th Century) summarized the contemplative tradition as "resting in God".  This was the classical meaning of contemplative prayer in the first sixteen centuries of the Catholic Church.  So you can see that this is not a new teaching!  It is not limited to Catholics, but is ecumenical, and taught internationally through Contemplative Outreach.
The fruits of Centering Prayer manifest in our personal relationship with God, ourselves and others as members of the mystical body of Christ.   The gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit grow and become more a part of our interactions with others.   Understanding, joy, peace, strength, and gentleness grow and become a living part of our lives.
The Immaculate Conception Centering Prayer Group meets on Tuesdayss at 10:30 A.M. in Meeting Room 2.  (St. Barnabas Group meets at 10:30 on Thursday).  During our meeting, we pray in silence for 20 minutes, then share our experience, and study an approved text together.  All are welcome to "come and see".  For more information, contact Mary Ruth Smith at 692-9547 or see www.contemplativeoutreach.org.

Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary
What is Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary?
In the simplest of terms, by means of Marian consecration, we give ourselves to Mary to be formed into the image of her Son, Jesus. Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary is an absolutely beautiful exercise to increase your spirituality and ability to truly serve our Lord Jesus Christ. The basic premise set forth by St. Louis Marie de Montfort is simply that Jesus came into the world through Mary and that for us to always be assured of being close to Jesus, even closer than ever before, we should go through Mary.
Consecration means to set aside for a sacred purpose. Mary's life was set aside for the sole purpose of serving our Lord. By following her example, we, too, can completely give ourselves to Christ in a fundamental way that consecrates us to Him. We give our lives to Him in service and love.
Why do this?
We consecrate ourselves in order to be more devoted to the Lord and His Blessed Mother. It helps us grow in holiness and increase our faith, hope, and love. It is a prayerful and focused method of drawing closer to Jesus than ever before.

The 33-day preparation can be done using  Preparation for Total Consecration According to St. Louis de Montfort or 33 Days to Morning Glory by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley.

Welcome New Member - Patricia Redmond
On September 19, 2015, Patricia said goodbye to her three sons, their families, and her home of 43 years in CT and headed towards a new life in Hendersonville. Patricia's two sisters had relocated here over a decade ago with reports of a slower, less harried lifestyle that helped in making her decision to move from CT to NC. Both sisters attend Immaculate Conception and brought her into the church family, and happily so! One favorite activity is dancing, especially Argentine Tango, and she also loves gardening. Patricia is having a great time finding her way around and exploring all that her new environment has to offer.

Confession in the Detention Center
Praise God, Fr. Roberto obtained approval to go into the Detention Center and hear confessions on Monday, May 16th.
It was an unprecedented occasion in which the Detention Center Chaplain permitted a priest to meet privately with female inmates. It was not just one confession, but three. Our parishioner, Valerie O'Brien, was on duty at the Detention Center and escorted the inmates, one-at-a-time, to meet with Fr. Roberto, who described the occasion as a grace-filled experience. While there is no formal procedure for priests hearing confessions here in Henderson County, it is a precedent that we need to use judiciously to protect the ground we have gained. Lessons learned: prayers are answered in the Lord's time; the Holy Spirit is moving in our parish; this Bible Belt town has needy Catholics; we need prayer warriors to pray for those in prisons and jails; we need more volunteers to go into the Henderson County Detention Center and into nearby prisons. Kairos - "God's Special Time"

Recently, two of our parishioners, Bob Gray and David Coe, were part of a team who conducted a Kairos Retreat for inmates at Marion Correctional Institute. A Kairos Retreat is an encounter with one's self, and the choices the inmates have made, or will make. It is an encounter with Christ, answering his question to us: "Who do you say I am?" It is an encounter with others, building strong Christian Community within prison walls and behind razor wire, completely changing the participants and the prison environment from darkness and despair to light, forgiveness, salvation, joy, and hope.

Kairos 15 at Marion was transformative to all who experienced it, both team members, and the 42 inmate participants. Here are but a few of the transformations from Kairos 15:
  • An inmate participant received forgiveness from Christ, and forgave another while sharing that he had planned to murder two people upon his pending release. Upon experiencing the message of the Kairos retreat, and receiving forgiveness, he now plans to seek help from the Christian Community to rebuild his life.
  • An incarcerated immigrant from Honduras who spoke no English found himself seated next to an inmate participant who spoke both English and Spanish fluently. This inmate translated the talks, and the Honduran inmate accepted Jesus as his Savior and transformed his life.
  • Many now participate in small prayer groups that meet on a regular basis to support one another and continue the journey to conversion.
Thank you for your support of Kairos 15 - your thoughts, your financial donations,  and most importantly, your continued prayers for our Prison Kairos and Ministry.

Oracion Fundamental

"Sosegate y enterate qué Yo soy Dios" Salmo 46:10

Kairos -  "LOS TIEMPOS DE DIOS"

Muchas gracias!
