I really think it's corny to start pieces with a definition from Merriam Webster, but I'm going to break my own rule today.
Independence: "Freedom from outside control or support"
The desire for independence gnaws at us when we as individuals have not been steering our own ship. When we are not in control of our internal alignment, and therefore we take on more than we desire, fight to keep our heads above water, and long for the feeling of ease. We may be in a job, a relationship, or in a community where we feel our freedom is compromised. But our PERCEPTION of freedom in these situations is from the OUTSIDE-IN. We feel obligated to gain PERMISSION to grow, to experiment, and especially to receive. We feel small in the forest of responsibility.
I feel this way from time to time with the studio. You, as students, are SO important to me, that it feels SELFISH to stand in my own space of growth, with so much growth happening around me. But I am learning (and re-learning) that ONLY from CENTERING and self-prioritizing does true freedom come.
Stepping through this mirage can be challenging, because it moves the center of gravity closer to our own hearts. And THIS means being called to live into our authentic desires, skills and purpose. Living authentically means we WILL have to parce out some of the duties we have been holding, taking some weight off our branches, digging our roots into the soil, and focusing on a select, BEST use of our time.
The truth is, for us to THRIVE, we MUST depend on others. We must allow others to help provide the resources we need to feel safe. It is the balance and paradox of continued growth.
Settle yourself and create some boundaries, because your branches grow from your roots. I have tried independence without roots, without trust in others, and without allowing myself to live authentically. There were too many other things to do. Maybe you know this feeling. The gains are short-lived.
I now know I was put on this planet to thrive. I know I was put on this planet to learn, and to allow my heart to open vulnerably to Truth.
So, in contrast to the above-listed definition, I am going to offer that
TRUE independence consists of inner guidance supported by the freedom to receive support from the outside.
