The Tennessee Holocaust Commission joins the world in mourning the loss of our friend and colleague, Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel was a Holocaust survivor, author, humanitarian, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and international leader for Holocaust remembrance, genocide prevention, and human rights. Dr. Wiesel impacted millions of people throughout the world by sharing his story of survival. He was devoted to fulfilling the promise of "never again" for all future victims of genocide. Elie Wiesel's legacy will continue through the countless students he has taught. The Commission is grateful for the impact he has made here in Tennessee through the lectures he conducted at Vanderbilt University and through his book Night which is now required reading in many high schools throughout the state. Commission Chair Larry Leibowitz says, "Elie Wiesel's death encourages us all to move from indifference to action. It reminds us that the Holocaust happened in a world not unlike our own, and we are all responsible for ensuring it doesn't happen again. It is now our duty to carry on his legacy."
