t notice but on June 20th the summer solstice heralded in the first day of summer concurrent with a full moon. What does all this have to do with being a TTN member you may be wondering? Well in a roundabout way it does. The snowbirds of our South Florida chapter have come and gone. Perhaps not one moment too soon as our temperatures soar into the nineties. The days are longer with more daylight to go and to do things. Many of our members are busy traveling and having summer adventures of their own. The full moon symbolically represents a time of clarity, fullness and obtainment of desires.
Since July is more than the halfway mark of 2016 (Can Christmas be far behind?), I though it would be a nice quiet time to reflect upon some of our personal goals, as well as, some of our TTN goals. I am reminded that a goal without a timeline is just a dream. Have you taken some actions towards achieving what you really desire to do in 2016? I am so excited to tell you that I have been taking writing classes and joined a critique group. True baby steps, but I feel with each one I am getting closer to becoming the published children's storybook author I always dreamed of being.
Reflecting on our chapter's goals to gain more members and to have engaging, interesting and fun activities, it has been a banner year. We have welcomed many new members and the number of the participants attending our events has nearly doubled.
I feel we saved the best event for last this year, which was a high tea at Oscar's Tea Room. We got to experience the last hurrah for Oscar's, because the two owner's decided to close their doors and return to England shortly after our event. They went out of their way to give us their very best and an amazing time. The many teas, delicious sandwiches, scones, quiches and divine cakes and pastries were a delight but bittersweet, as we were sad to see them go.
On July 9th your very dedicated steering committee will be very busy planning for another year of adventures and fulfillment of our fondest desires. Have a Wonderful Summer!

MEMBERS ON THE MOVE

The South Florida Chapter's Members on the Move attended the City of Fort Lauderdale's United With Orlando: Standing For Equality Program at the Parker Playhouse on Friday, June 17. Sponsored by the City of Fort Lauderdale, the event was intended to show support to the City of Orlando, the LGBT community, and all who were affected by the horrific shooting. Featured speakers included Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, along with several other federal, state and local legislators. Saria Finkelstein, the daughter of Howard Finkelstein and Donna Chase who many of us know, closed out the program with an impassioned speech decrying the tragedy and demanding acceptance for all. ---Nancy Maxwell

In our queasy times, it may help to remember that world has bumbled through crises before (if with plenty of casualties). In that spirit, I read "Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania," by Erik Larson this month, a gripping and somehow entertaining account of the sinking by a German submarine of the great ocean liner with more than a thousand people aboard.
I also watched "Deutschland 83," an eight-episode German spy series, now on Hulu, about the months in 1983 when NATO and the Soviet Union hovered perilously close to the brink of nuclear war. Fine acting by young Jonas Nay, as a reluctant East German spy, and his spunky handler and aunt, Maria Schrader. Real world perils - not superhero stuff.
Maya Bat-Ami, this newsletter's editor, alerted me to "Jiro Dreams of Sushi," a biography of Jiro Ono, now 85, who is considered the world's greatest sushi chef. To nab a reservation at his small (3 star Michelin) restaurant in a Tokyo subway station you need to call months in advance, but I'm planning on watching his story instead, now available on demand on Netflix.

We joined each other
for a very special tantalizing traditional
High Tea.
Earl grey, lady grey, jasmine green were just a few of the many teas we enjoyed at Oscar's Tea Room on June 10. Beautiful and varied teapots, high tea treats and individual attentive service were part of our fun experience. We were at our refined best, many in hats, no gloves, except when we were laughing loudly over numerous stories. Unfortunately, Oscar's was closing that weekend , so you'll have to take our word that you missed a charming TTN experience. Look for our next outing so that you can enjoy as well.

| THEATER PEER GROUP |

The Theater Group is planning to announce a play to see each month this year, starting with the Sunday,
September 25th, 2:00pm performance of The
Rothschilds at the Stage Door. (See summary below.) Instead of doing a group rate, the first one who decides to go buys their own ticket and notes their seat number. Others who want to go then buy one next to that person. The group usually goes for a meal before or after the show.
In October, we will see Mud at the Thinking Cap Theater on Sunday, October 30 at 2:00pm.
The Rothschilds is a musical based on The Rothschilds by Frederic Morton. It tells of the rise of the Rothschild family from humble beginnings in Germany, to their founding of their financial empire and growing political influence, to their assistance in funding Napoleon's defeat, and how they secured a declaration of rights for European Jews in the midst of an oppressive era. The Rothschilds ran on Broadway in 1970 and was revived off-Broadway in 1990.

Our chapter is launching an 'email blast list' for TTN members who want to connect beyond the scope of the newsletter. Our newsletter will contain all chapter information, while this list will be a vehicle for smaller connections
. Members on the move is all about looking for people who might want to connect for a day trip, theatre, museum, community event, nature walk , lunch, etc. This is strictly a voluntary list and if you would like to join please send your name and email address to

BECOME A MENTOR
MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A YOUNG PERSON'S LIFE........
HELP THEM TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO COLLEGE ON SCHOLARSHIP!
A mentor is oftentimes the key to success for a student. In order to support and guide a student towards success, these are some of the actions of a Take Stock in Children mentor:

Meet with a student once per week for at least 30 minutes at the school site.
·
Help a student build a foundation of basic values.
·
Challenge a student to take responsibility for his or her actions.
·
Help a student set (and reach) his or her goals.
·
Improve a student's self-esteem.
TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN (TSIC)
Take Stock in Children was established in 1995 as a non-profit organization in Florida that provides a unique opportunity for deserving low-income youth/students, many from minority families, to escape the cycle of poverty through education. We offer our students college scholarships, caring volunteer mentors and hope for a better life. Our comprehensive services start in middle school, continue through high school and include their transition into college.
Our program is based on the principle that given extensive support, motivation and accountability, children will work hard to ensure that they graduate from high school and attain a college degree. We fund our college scholarships and student services through a unique public-private fund raising model, and our mentors generously volunteer their mentoring services to our children.
Take Stock in Children's multi-year commitment to at-risk children throughout our state is also an investment in the communities in which our students live. We know that the education of a child is an investment in their future and the assured way of breaking the cycle of poverty. Our goal is to continue to reduce the number of high school drop-outs and to increase the number of students who finish college and enter the workforce successfully.
In Broward County, we currently serve over 400 deserving students and will recruit and train over 500 volunteer mentors to be matched with our scholars.
