Check out these cool summer events!

"Summer must be a quite time at the library, right? With school out and all, I bet you can breathe a real sigh of relief."

"Uhh...no."
For Adults:

  • July 9 will be our recycling day book sale! We had a huge turnout last summer and hope to again. Come between 9 and noon to adopt homeless books.
  • July 12, our Intrepid Readers book club will discuss Jenna Blum's The Stormchasers over coffee and refreshments at 6:30pm. We have plenty copies, so come pick up one today.
  • July 21, we will continue our journey through the most epic films in history with the 1925 Soviet silent film, Battleship Potempkin. This film is credited with inventing the method we now call montage and was named the greatest film of all time at the Brussels World Fair in 1958. The film will start rolling at 6pm.
  • August 6th, Primerica Financial Services will be presenting How Money Works for Kids: A Parent's Guide. This presentation will last from 10:30 to 11:30am and cover a broad range of topics and strategies for teaching children financial literacy. Register by July 21 for a free booklet by visiting us at the library, calling, or emailing [email protected].
As part of our summer reading program for adults, we have a raffle jar at the circulation desk. You can claim a ticket any time you check in your books. Throughout the summer, there will be drawings for prizes like tote bags and gloves. At the end of the summer, we will be raffling off a Kindle Fire! We are also encouraging everyone to commit to reading 4 books this summer and posting about them on social media with the hashtag #whatsyourfour.
For Kids:
Deb's Summer Storytime is ongoing from July 5 to August 9. Call us to register for a group. The weekly schedule is as follows:

Ages 15 months to 2 years : Mondays at 10am.
Ages 3-5: Mondays at 1pm or Tuesdays at 6pm.
The Summer Reading Program kickoff was this week, but there is still lots more to come! All these events are on Wednesdays at 10am:
  • July 13 - Motion Commotion. There will be moving, hula-hooping, relay races, etc. Decorate a hula hoop to take home. Registration is required for this one, because we don't want to run out of hula-hoops.
  • July 20 - Healthy Choices, Healthy Lives will be a high-energy comedy program by Robert Rivest. He really is a hoot, so don't miss out. Sponsored by the Douglas Cultural Council.
  • July 27 - Reading Olympics with Jim Manning. Magic, comedy, balloon artistry, and more. Funded in part by the Douglas Cultural Council.
  • August 3 - Fueling your Engine. Crafts and games! Each participant is asked to bring a piece of fruit to make a giant fruit salad to be enjoyed by all. Registration required.
  • August 10 - Picnic finale and prize giveaway.

In addition to these events, all children are welcome to come to the library and register to log their reading hours. All children will be eligible for prizes even if they can't attend storytimes or reading programs. Any child who logs ten hours or more is in for something especially cool...
