HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!
The City of Rancho Cordova just turned 13! Once upon a time, there was a community of citizens living east of Sacramento who marched to the voting booth and declared themselves an incorporated city. It was November 2002, and an astonishing 78 percent of those voting in the election said "yes" to the incorporation of Rancho Cordova. Eight months later, on July 1, 2003, the City of Rancho Cordova became an official legal entity and the newest city in the State of California. Hip hip hooray!

Please be advised that outdoor irrigation restrictions have changed for Golden State Water Company, Sacramento County Water Agency, and California American Water, which serve customers in Rancho Cordova.

FOURTH OF JULY PARADE WINNERS
The 2016 Rancho Cordova Fourth of July parade featured 70 local organizations showing off their best in parade presentations! This year's parade included the inaugural youth band competition, with six local bands competing for a $5,000 grand prize. CARING FOR YOUR TREES
Temperatures are in the triple digits and we have gone 40 days without rain! Is your tree looking thirsty? Here are some steps that can help you and your trees:
- Know your soil.
- Take a screwdriver or trowel and dig down about 6 inches near the drip line of your tree (the soil beneath the edge of the leaf canopy).
- Is the soil moist? If so, you are good to go for a while.
- Is the soil dry? If so, you need to water!
- If your tree is young, use the bucket method to water. Young trees need 10 - 15 gallons of water each week in the hot summer months.
- If your tree is mature, the key is an infrequent deep soak. The majority of tree roots for most types of trees are only in the top few feet of soil. So the region to target with your thorough soak is 12 - 18 inches below the surface. Use a soaker hose, a fan sprinkler on low, or a drip tube with emitters laid out in the drip line area of the canopy, for several hours.
- Mulch, mulch, mulch!

CORDOVA HIGH SCHOOL IB GRADUATES
Hear testimonials from three of this year's Cordova High seniors on how the IB Programme prepared them for their future.
In the moments before his graduation day, Cordova High senior Daniel Miliate said he was proud to be among the school's very first students to graduate from its prestigious and rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.
"We're like the pioneers," he said. "We helped pave the way for other students. I'm grateful for the IB program because I get to be close to the people who want the same things."
Graduating from the IB Programme is a chance for students to show top universities that they are ready for the next level of success. Students from this year's graduating class boast an impressive list of post-high school plans, and many are enrolling in four-year colleges including the state universities of: Santa Barbara, Merced, Sacramento, East Bay, Bakersfield, Chico, and Monterey.
"I chose the IB Programme because I wanted the challenge, and I also wanted to set myself up for the future," said Miliate, who will be attending American River College in the fall with plans to transfer to Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. "Maybe I'll be a college professor. Maybe I'll come back to (Cordova High) and teach here. I really wanted to open up doors."
The IB Programme at Mitchell Middle and Cordova High schools prepares students to make an impact in the world around them through rigorous, hands-on learning. Folsom Cordova's IB Programme connects classroom learning with the real world - developing well-rounded, independent thinkers ready for the global economy.
Folsom Cordova has two International Baccalaureate programs: the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme. All students in grades 6-10 attending Mitchell Middle and Cordova High schools participate in the MYP Programme, and students who choose to continue their IB studies in grades 11-12 can participate in the challenging Diploma Programme.
The District's first graduating class from the Diploma Programme had 49 students - 21 of whom received the prestigious full Diploma, which required students to take more higher-level courses and helped them earn college credit at UC schools.

LEADERSHIP RANCHO CORDOVA IS
RECRUITING FOR CLASS XI
Leadership Rancho Cordova (LRC) launches a new class on a year-long exploration of our city this fall, and the search is on for eager students.
In the spirit of developing community leaders, the program - offered by the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce - enters its 11th year! It now boasts more than 150 alumni - many currently serving in community leadership roles throughout the city and region.
The next class of approximately 25 will be selected to represent a broad mix of backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, and employment - a key ingredient to a successful leadership program, said Rachele Burton, Chair of the program's governing board.
"Community leadership and engagement can be complex, and we want to encourage and support a pool of local people who have taken the time to dig deep and study the many layers of Rancho Cordova," she added.
Class XI begins in October with a kick-off reception at Rancho Cordova City Hall, followed by a two-day retreat in Tahoe to immerse themselves in leadership fundamentals and begin the process of team building.
In November, the class begins monthly "modules" and explores topics such as the state of volunteerism, local government, arts and culture, education, land use and economic development, recreation and tourism, and public safety in Rancho Cordova, along with leadership lessons that pertain to each sector.
The group will also develop and execute a class project - the signature of their class. Past class projects have included the development of the Rancho Cordova International Festival (now "iFest"), a photographic history of Rancho Cordova, a summer family film series, and refurbishing the dog park at Hagan Park.
The class is not free and does require time commitments for modules, project development, and execution. But organizers believe the effort is worthwhile.

SMALL COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM
Do you have a great idea for your neighborhood? We want you to dream big for your community, and the City of Rancho Cordova will pitch in $500 to make your dreams a reality.
Rancho Cordova's Small Community Grants program is intended to engage citizens in creative efforts to improve the community, and generate accomplishments that citizens can take pride in.
The City of Rancho Cordova will provide up to $500, one-time cash awards to community groups for special projects in our neighborhoods. Community groups are responsible for proposing, designing, and implementing the project. Grants will be awarded on a first come, first served basis following review by the City. One application per person per calendar year will be considered.
The Mobil Country Club in Rancho Cordova - a small community
on Sunrise Blvd. for people 55 years or older - received a grant for their Emergency Evacuation Committee. The park has 480 homes and only one exit, and as all the residents are senior citizens and many are handicapped, the committee needed help.
The grant was used to purchase safety vests and hats to identify volunteers who would be working with police, fire, and medical teams if an evacuation was necessary.
With the help of the Red Cross, the committee also installed smoke detectors in many of the residents homes for no cost. This is just one of the many ways the Small Community Grants program has helped Rancho Cordova residents.

RIVER FRIENDLY CARWASH

River-Friendly Fundraiser Carwash Program
is here to help!
Developed by the Sacramento Stormwater Quality Partnership, this program provides resources to promote environmentally-friendly car washes that protect our creeks and rivers.
Soapy water can cause harm to fish and other aquatic life. This used water can carry dirt, grease, and other harmful pollutants with it. Typically, the water flows along a parking lot or other paved surface into the storm drain system and from there, it flows untreated to creeks and into the American River. Here are some tips to consider when planning your fundraiser car wash:
- Commercial carwashes are safer on the environment because these facilities are equipped to trap the sudsy water and route it to the sanitary sewer system for treatment. Consider partnering with a commercial carwash to host your fundraiser there.
- Quick Quack Car Wash in Rancho Cordova is a program partner. To view a complete list of program partners, click here.
- Use products labeled non-toxic, phosphate free, and biodegradable. These products can be purchased at most large retail outlets.
- Use a bucket of soapy water to re-soap rags or sponges throughout the carwash rather than adding more soap directly to rags or sponges.
- Wring out sponges and rags into buckets, not on the ground.
- Conserve water and minimize the amount of wastewater you produce by using a spray nozzle with an automatic shut-off.
- Always empty buckets of wastewater into the sanitary sewer system via sinks, toilets, or sanitary sewer clean-out, or onto landscaped areas where the wastewater can be absorbed.

August marks the return of Friday Night Concerts, which brings music under the stars by a great lineup of family-friendly bands. CORDOVA STUDENTS WIN AWARD
Students designed an octagonal shed for the contest, including working drawings, a safety plan, and a project management chart. Additionally, CHS junior Yulia Khandryka won the Safety Person of the Year award - the only individual recognition awarded at the competition. Not only did Yulia design the entire structure, she also displayed leadership by maintaining safety for the student team members throughout the competition.

EPPIE'S GREAT RACE
Registration is Now Open!
Held along the scenic American River Parkway in Rancho Cordova, Eppie's Great Race features a 5.82-mile run, a 12.5-mile bike ride and a 6.35-mile paddle. Annually the event attracts 1,300 participants, roughly 4,000 spectators and 1,000 volunteers. For 2016, event organizers have added a new stand-up paddle board division.
As always, the race features many Ironperson and Team Divisions for both adults and juniors.
Race proceeds benefit the Sacramento County Therapeutic Recreation Services, and are expected to cover one third of the organization's yearly budget. The organization provides recreational activities and other services for children and adults with disabilities.
Founded in 1974 by Sacramento-area restauranteur/entrepreneur Eppie Johnson, Eppie's Great Race is considered the world's oldest triathlon. This year's race will take place on July 16th. More information is available at eppiesgreatrace.org.

's Coloma Brown Ale captured its third gold medal at the annual California State Fair Commercial Beer Competition. David Mathis, Owner and Brewer, and Andy Armstrong, Head Brewer and Partner, are thrilled about taking home this award. According to the duo, "Our Coloma Brown is an American brown ale with hints of roasted coffee and dark chocolate, and it's unlike any brown ale you've had." Customers are always telling them how Coloma Brown is well balanced and easy to drink.

Meet the artists, see the art, and enjoy complimentary refreshments during an Artist Reception from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 21st. Ensembles from the Rancho Cordova Civic Light Orchestra will provide a musical background. Admission is free of charge.
Farm to Fork will be on display through October 1st and is available for viewing weekdays from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., or anytime Rancho Cordova City Hall is open.
Hot summer afternoons are a perfect time to retreat to a cool spot and let your inner artist escape! Local artists are invited to create something wonderful for The Fall Show, an exhibit of fine art organized by Rancho Cordova Arts and featured at Rancho Cordova City Hall. The drop off date for the show is September 23rd, so mark your calendar and get creating.

The Rancho Cordova Athletic Association has named a diverse group of elite athletes to be inducted into the Rancho Cordova Sports Hall of Fame this fall.
From the 1973 state champions for the mile relay from Cordova High School's track and fi
eld team to high school baseball players who went on to play Major League Baseball, the 2016 class of inductees reads like a "Who's Who" of Rancho Cordova sports heroes, including athletes, coaches, and "H
eart of a
Champion" supporters who have been central to building remarkable sports legends.
The inductees will be honored during the 2016 Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony slated for 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 10th at Rancho Cordova City Hall. Tickets for the event will include an appetizer, cocktail reception, and awards program. Tickets will be limited to 350, and the event promises to be a sell-out.

The City of Sacramento and unincorporated Sacramento County are saying goodbye to single-use plastic bags. Now, grocery stores, pharmacies and other retail stores in unincorporated areas of the county and City of Sacramento will no longer provide single-use plastic bags. Buy a paper or reusable bag at check-out. Stores subject to the ban must make recyclable paper or reusable bags available for purchase for a minimum of $.10 per bag. This went into effect in the City of Sacramento on January 1, 2016 and in unincorporated Sacramento County on July 1, 2016.
This plastic bag ban DOES NOT apply to grocery stores, pharmacies, and other retail stores within the city limits of the City of Rancho Cordova. However, store owners may choose to charge for plastic bags as a business owner - just know it's not a result of the plastic bag ban in force.

CRITICAL BLOOD SHORTAGE
BloodSource has an unprecedented critical need for blood of all types. This month, reserves of blood throughout BloodSource service areas are projected to be at least 4,700 pints below required inventory levels - the equivalent of more than 14,000 lives that could be saved.
Currently, the blood inventory level has been trending at an approximate two-day supply for patients, which is half of the ideal quantity needed to provide a safe and available blood inventory.
