Fr. Lynch comments on the recent
announcement of Mediation taking place in our Diocese
There appears to be some confusion about the announcement recently sent out regarding the mediation process being undertaken in our Diocese through the Office of Pastoral Development which operates under the authority of the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. This diocesan process is a confidential process and has been undertaken in response to a request of the Standing Committee of the Diocese under Title III. Canon 12 section 10 of the Canons of the Episcopal Church (2015 edition). The language of this Canon specifies: "When the pastoral relationship between a Bishop Diocesan, Bishop Coadjutor or Bishop Suffragan and the Diocese is imperiled by disagreement or dissension, and the issues are deemed serious by a Bishop of that Diocese or a two-thirds majority vote of all of the members of the Standing Committee or a two-thirds majority vote of the Diocesan Convention, any party may petition the Presiding Bishop, in writing, to intervene and assist the parties in their efforts to resolve the disagreement or dissension."
This matter is not specific to our Church of the Resurrection.
All clergy in the diocese received this announcement by email Wednesday (6/29), and those with congregations were instructed to make it available to all parishioners. We were told this was to insure the entire diocese would be aware of this ongoing mediation process. Essentially, the intent appears to be to insure complete transparency of process. However, like almost all matters of this sort, there is a level of confidentiality that is required in order to protect all participants in such a process. Consequently, the announcement (which we posted verbatim in our weekly message from the Rector) was vague on specifics and details. Personally, in this matter, I am working on the premise that if we (the people of the Diocese) need to know something, those responsible will inform us in a timely manner. I am confident there will be some sort of concluding report that advises us of outcomes and actions we (the Diocese) will undertake as a result of the recommendations of the mediation process.
Unless requested by those undertaking this diocesan mediation, we do not plan to offer information sessions or discussions about this matter in the parish. I am not privy to any specific information in this matter. Of course, do call if you have concerns or questions; however, please understand, either by lack of my personal knowledge, there is little material content I can add to this diocesan announcement.
