The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur are in 17 countries across 5 continents.  "Teach them what they need to know for life" was the mandate given by St. Julie Billiart to the Sisters during the early days of the Congregation of Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.  The mandate has not changed.  What has changed is what and how the sisters teach.

Today, teaching in the Democratic Republic of Congo is very different than teaching in Lima, Peru or Los Angeles, CA.

Schools in each of these countries reflect the  environment, society  and economy.

Every school needs a caring and compassionate environment to encourage learning.

An Occasion of Learning

 

T his chair is an occasion for learning for Diego (not his real name).



Diego willingly carries his chair to and from school every day in a small school outside the town of Ngidinga, Democratic Republic of Congo. This keeps his place. Diego's class is inside a still to be finished school room because                                                         he is one of the older students.                                     

The younger students attend classes daily under a covered structure adjacent to the unfinished school room.

Families in the small village where Diego and the other students live have committed to completing a school structure.  The villagers live in poverty and know that education is important for the future.  A solid school structure is a sign that education is permanent not temporary.
Dear Partners in Mission,

With your help, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur are changing schools across the globe!  Our schools in the United States are supported through great generosity of many people involved in local communities as well as local and state funding options.  For schools in developing countries, our schools are dependent on the  generosity and philanthropy  of many individuals - good men and women who know our Mission and will support us in this Mission - a reminder from Mere St. Joseph to St. Julie Billiart when St. Julie was worried that the Sisters did not have enough food or supplies for schools .

But we know that a good school is more than a building.

Thank you for your presence and your support in our Mission.
