This year's Annual Convention will be here before you know it! A strong convention committee of members and staff from AIA Kentucky and AIA Indiana are putting
the finishing touches on the program for the 2016 AIA Kentucky/AIA Indiana Convention set for September 15-17 in Lexington, Kentucky. Here's a quick snapshot of the exciting speakers and activities that await you:
Off-site Events that include the Big Ass Design Build Bourbon Blast at Commonwealth Stadium's Woodford Reserve Club on Thursday evening and a Tour/Garden Party Happy Hour at the home and garden of Jon Carloftis on Friday evening. PLUS educational tours of the new 21c Museum Hotel and the Castle & Key Distillery will be offered on Saturday morning!
You can earn up to 16 AIA/CES learning units at your choice of 30 break-out educational sessions, visit with new and interesting vendors during the exhibit hall reception, network with colleagues, and enjoy presentations of the 2016 Design Awards and Service Awards. So plan to join us for all of this learning, fun and fellowship at the AIA KY/IN Convention!

The 2016 AIA Kentucky/AIA Indiana Convention is right around the corner! As we prepare for the registration site to open in mid-July, we continue to actively seek exhibitors and sponsors who will support this exciting, three-day event. We are offering a wide variety of packages for both the Convention and the Big Ass Design Build Bourbon Blast, which will be held on the opening night to benefit ACE Mentor Scholarship programs in Kentucky and Indiana. BIM Implementation Committee
|
|
AIA Kentucky is convening a committee to work on BIM implementation with our institutional Owners. A kickoff meeting was held on June 28 at the KY Engineering Center, in which goals of the committee were identified to be as follows:
- Share common concerns and lessons learned in regard to BIM implementation.
- Identify/mitigate the risk factors that we all face as our workflows continue to change.
- Determine how the architectural community can lead the conversation in BIM implementation, with an emphasis on presenting a balanced approach that is mutually beneficial to the Owner, the design team, and the construction team.

Nominations Open - AIA KY Secretary, Associate Director
|
|
AIA Kentucky is seeking expressions of interest from members interested in serving in leadership positions on the AIA Kentucky Board of Directors. The position of Secretary for 2017 will be open, with preference given to a Central Kentucky Chapter member to maintain geographic balance on the Executive Committee. This is a one-year term that traditionally leads to ongoing service in subsequent years as Treasurer, President-Elect and then President of AIA Kentucky. The Associate Director, to be filled by an AIA Associate Member, serves a one-year term on the AIA Kentucky Board, for the 2017 calendar year. Architect Members interested in the Secretary position and Associate Members interested in the Associate Director position should submit a letter of interest to Nominating Committee Chair (and past president) Charles Cash, AIA no later than Friday, July 22, 2016. Ballots for all 2017 AIA Kentucky Officers will be distributed 30 days prior to the Annual Meeting, per the bylaws, with ratification of election results at the AIA KY Annual Meeting during the September convention.

Volunteers Needed for State Committee Appointments
|
|
AIA Kentucky has been asked by the Governor's office to submit candidates for consideration for positions on two state committees: the Single Family Dwelling Advisory Committee in Housing Buildings and Construction and the Architects Selection Committee in the Finance Cabinet. Three (3) nominees are required (of which one is chosen) for the Single Family group and nine (9) nominees (of which three are chosen for a pool) for the Architects Selection Committee. The latter is best suited primarily for retired architects and/or those who are not involved in soliciting public work and therefore would not have a conflict of interest. AIA Architect Members who are interested in being nominated to serve as our representative to either of these groups should please contact Janet Pike, 859-223-8201, by end of day next Monday July 11. A simple application form (available from Janet) and resume are all that is required.

Architectural Artists Directory
|
|
The Kentucky Arts Council is accepting applications for the Architectural Artists Directory through August15. Professional artists age 21 or older whose work includes architectural elements, custom-made fixtures, and uniquely crafted building materials and design elements are encouraged to apply. Examples include cabinetry, murals, light fixtures, sinks and stained-glass windows. Historic Rehabilitation Awards

The National Housing & Rehabilitation Association is accepting nominations for the annual J. Timothy Anderson Awards for Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation until July 29. The "Timmys" celebrate innovative redesign and usage of great buildings from our past and they look for a wide variety of nominees proposed by a wide variety of people interested in American architecture, design and development. Recent Promotions
K. Norman Berry Associates Architects is excited to announce that Wendy Balas, AIA and Veena Reddy, AIA have been named new Associates and also that Kathy Tredway is the new Office Manager.
Sabrina Oaks, AIA, recently joined Margaret Jacobs, AIA as principals of Tate Hill Jacobs Architects. "Tate Hill Jacobs has an amazingly diverse range of projects and a deep history of quality design. The firm approaches each project with humility and a refreshing lack of ego," says Oaks. "I am honored to join a firm so committed to their clients and the public service of architecture." Says Jacobs, "The most exciting part of this transition for me is the energy. In 1988, I joined Sarah Tate... Now, 28 years later, the firm has grown stronger and is wiser. Sabrina brings enthusiasm and a fresh perspective that will directly benefit our clients." Oaks has extensive experience with large-scale food and beverage and industrial design projects, as well as fast track design/build and educational projects. Since joining THJ, she has enjoyed building collaborative relationships with Fayette County Public Schools, Berea Independent Schools, Morehead State University, Big Ass Solutions, and others.
AIA News Coverage
We love to see our members in the news! So we were very excited to find that some of Central Kentucky's firms were mentioned in the June 17 edition of Louisville's Business First. The issue featured a very interesting interview with Brad Stengel, AIA, co-founder of Stengel Hill Architecture, Inc., about the success that the firm has experienced since it was opened in 1996. Stengel Hill, which has offices in both Louisville and in Lexington, has 14 registered architects, and is considered to be the second largest architecture firm in its region. The issue also included an article about the exciting and flexible new office space that Studio A Architecture designed for mobile app-development company, Forest Giant.

AXP in Here!
On June 29, the NCARB training program formerly known as the Intern Development Program (IDP) was officially rebranded as the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) and was updated to reflect 6 broad areas of architectural practice. The new AXP Guidelines contains comprehensive instructions for navigating this transition and completing the program. Many additional resources are also available, such as the My AXP mobile app, which is intended to make logging hours and submitting reports easier than ever. Check out NCARB.org to learn more!
Integrated Path to Licensure
At their Annual Business Meeting (ABM) in Seattle last month, NCARB featured a panel focused on next steps for the Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL). This presentation included a video with several of the deans and department chairs participating in the first cohort of accepted programs, as well as an announcement of the latest addition of accepted programs.

The second annual I Look Up Film Challenge launched at AIA Convention 2016. AIA is looking for architects and filmmakers to team up to produce a short film that demonstrates architecture as a solution. Kelly and I are happy to serve as hosts for the AIA CACE Annual Meeting coming up August 10-12 in Louisville. CACE stands for Council of Architectural Component Executives - the folks across the country who serve as staff at AIA state and local chapters. We're expecting about 125 of our colleagues for 2.5 days of professional development and sharing of ideas/programs that bring value to AIA members nationwide. We're visiting both the Muhammad Ali Center and the Kentucky Derby Museum, and Steve Wiser, AIA has agreed to lead both a downtown walking tour and his infamous Ghost Tour for attendees. We plan to show our colleagues what Southern Hospitality is all about, while showcasing a great city and its outstanding architecture.
As a special bonus for AIA Kentucky members, the AIA Central Kentucky Chapter is hosting a chapter program in conjunction with this meeting, to take advantage of the presence in Louisville of AIA President Russ Davidson, FAIA and Executive Vice President/CEO Robert Ivy, FAIA. Russ and Robert will be featured at a chapter program on Tuesday evening, August 9th at The Henry Clay, where they'll share the latest information on AIA's member value initiatives - programs, federal advocacy, public outreach, research and more. Their presentation will be followed by an interactive panel discussion with Robert, Russ and representatives from AIA Kentucky, AIA Central Kentucky, AIA East Kentucky, and AIA Northern Kentucky. A reception at 8Up will conclude the event, so we hope you'll take advantage of this unique opportunity to converse with AIA National's leaders in a chic, architectural setting.
