Letter from the CEO

"The only way to do great work is to love what you do."
Steve Jobs
After 30 years of working in various nonprofit organizations, I still love the opportunity to affect positive social change. There's no better place for me to do that than at Gilda's Club South Florida, with a mission that I believe in and feel passionate about in a community I call home. As with many of you, cancer has touched my family and they have benefited from Cancer Support Community services.

Thank you to all the members, staff, board, supporters, donors and funders who have welcomed me with open arms to a very special house with a red door! Entering that door brings a responsibility to carry out the values, expectations and traditions of the past while reinventing the vision of tomorrow.

Developing that vision with all of you over the next several months will be the blueprint that guides us over the next several years. I more than welcome and encourage your feedback. Your input broadens the possibilities for Gilda's Club South Florida, and you enable us to reach our full potential. You - the members, volunteers, supporters, donors, funders, board members and staff - all are part of the magic on the other side of the red door. I look forward to working with all of you to fulfill our mission.

"Touched by Cancer" Kicks Off Soon
G ilda's Club South Florida will soon kick off its latest program, "Touched by Cancer," focused on providing cancer prevention and early intervention for Women Partnering with Women in Broward County.

Thanks to the generosity of Susan G. Komen, Our Fund, the Jay Weiss Institute Community Grant Program and the Community Foundation of Broward, Gilda's Club will offer 8 community-based workshops at various locations throughout the County.  Each program will feature a medical professional discussing cancer risks specific to the population including lung cancer, breast cancer, colon and gynecological cancers and educate on prevention and screening. Gilda's Club will also incorporate healthy lifestyles programming such as meditation, a hands on art project, music, spoken word or crafting to create a relaxed, social environment that includes the key educational component. "Touched by Cancer" workshops aim to create a friendly, place for LBT women to participate and interact with other women with similar issues and concerns.

Gilda's Club Participates in Nationwide Cancer Moonshot

On Wednesday, June 29th Gilda's Club participated in the nationwide Cancer Moonshot Summit initiative joining  hundreds of leaders across the health, academic, private industry, and philanthropic sectors as well as patients, survivors, caregivers and advocates. It was the first time that individuals and organizations spanning the entire cancer community and beyond convened under the national charge of doubling the rate of progress toward ending cancer as we know it.

More than 35 attendees viewed the live broadcast of Vice President Joe Biden's speech, followed by break out groups focused on overcoming barriers in the fight against cancer. Each participant left the summit with a commitment to new collaborations toward the Moonshot goals.
