local teenager asks Make-A-Wish® and Habitat to help her give back

Seventeen-year-old Julia is an exceptional teenager with one wish - to give back to her community. Julia could have wished to go anywhere, meet anyone or have anything her heart desired, but she chose to use her wish, granted by Make-A-Wish, to create a lasting, life-changing impact for local families through Habitat for Humanity.

Julia is a senior at Mission Hills High School in San Marcos and plays on the varsity volleyball team where she was named MVP two years in a row. Last summer, she visited the Dominican Republic to build a medical clinic, and was immediately hooked on giving back. She had plans to make a similar trip again this year, but, in November, was diagnosed with cancer that keeps her close to home for treatment.

Make-A-Wish and Habitat for Humanity came together to make this inspiring young girl's wish a reality. Habitat created a unique build experience for Julia's friends and family; they framed a Habitat home and built playhouses for children in need.

When asked what moved her to make this wish, Julia responded, "I just want to help as many people as possible."

three Habitat employees help
to revitalize Detroit

Veterans are a powerful force when called upon to serve.  The Mission Continues empowers veterans who are adjusting to life at home find purpose through community impact. This June, they organized a mass deployment that mobilized veterans from across the country alongside local partners and volunteers for Operation Motown Muster in Detroit, Michigan.

Out of 2,500 applicants, only 375 were chosen to participate and three were our very own Habitat for Humanity staff members. Anne Marie Conte, Neighborhood Revitalization Program Manager, Mikhail Oshkin, Veteran Outreach Manager, and James Cyr, Neighborhood Revitalization Construction Superintendent traveled to Detroit to revitalize neighborhoods, parks and schools. Each day, the team executed a variety of high-impact missions including construction, landscaping, painting, and public arts projects.

Detroit is home to nearly 700,000 residents who are resilient and already working to shape the city's future. It's a proud history worth fighting for, and we are proud that our Habitat team was a part of it.
sponsor spotlight: Wells Fargo

We are incredibly grateful for the partnership with Wells Fargo. Since 2014, they have donated $110,000 to San Diego Habitat for Humanity! Also, hardworking employees come build with us several times a year and in August, we look forward to having 60 volunteers from Wells Fargo help on our National City rehab. Thank you for continuing to be a great partner and making a difference in the lives of local families on their journey towards homeownership.
welcome new ReStore manager, Anne Scheidler!

Anne recently moved to San Diego from Indiana in to be closer to her family and started volunteering at the San Diego Habitat ReStore while getting settled.  Habitat holds a lot of meaning for her and her family. Her children have traveled the world volunteering with Habitat.

Most of Anne's career has been spent in customer service and management in manufacturing, distribution and warehousing. From 1985 to 1999, she managed family-owned Meineke Discount Muffler franchises in the Midwest.

Anne has an immense dedication to Habitat and the people we serve every day.   We are thrilled to welcome her as our new Mission Valley ReStore manager! If you see Anne in the ReStore, make sure to say hello!
