I Will Send Rain

New Books for July

Inspired by vintage photographs, these five lyrical stories capture the surprising intersections of love and friendship that alter life's journeys. Charming and poignant, they are a testament to the power of human connection, and brim with a grace and humor that could come only from the pen of Alexander McCall Smith.
T he bestselling author of A Hundred Summers brings the Roaring Twenties brilliantly to life in this enchanting and compulsively readable tale of intrigue, romance, and scandal in New York Society, brimming with lush atmosphere, striking characters, and irresistible charm.

You've seen the headlines: Parmesan cheese made from sawdust. Lobster rolls containing no lobster at all. Extra-virgin olive oil that isn't. Fake foods are in our supermarkets, our restaurants, and our kitchen cabinets. Award-winning food journalist and travel writer Larry Olmsted exposes this pervasive and dangerous fraud perpetrated on unsuspecting Americans. Real Food/Fake Food brings readers into the unregulated food industry, revealing that this shocking deception extends from high-end foods like olive oil, wine, and Kobe beef to everyday staples such as coffee, honey, juice, and cheese.  Part cautionary tale, part culinary crusade, Real Food/Fake Food is addictively readable, mouth-wateringly enjoyable, and utterly relevant. Larry Olmsted convinces us why real food matters.

Greetings!

We booksellers are the luckiest people in the universe - we see and have access to scores of books crossing our threshold literally every day, and we get to choose according to our proclivities and taste at any given time.  Every so often we come across a book that resonates with many of us in a way that is significant and meaningful, since most often we are all reading different things.  This season, HOMEGOING, by Yaa Gyasi, is that rare book that has captured a number of our staff and deservedly has jumped on to the Indy bestseller list within two weeks of being published.  It is a sweeping history - though a novel - of the slave trade's legacy, starting in 18th century Ghana and ending in present day America.  It tells of eight generations of unforgettable characters who embody all the emotional and physical turmoil that history foists on them.  Gyasi was born in Ghana and grew up in Alabama, and at only 26, is being compared to Toni Morrison and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.  She has said "I hope that we can start to have a longer view of history and how that informs the way we treat people in the present."  A classic has been born.  A wonderful, heartbreaking and searing book.

Enjoy the beautiful Vermont summer!
