Summer musings -  "Clear Doorways"

Maybe it is bec ause of the warmth of the sun and the generosity of the days that are at the longest they will be  all year long.  Maybe it is because the sparrow carries on in the good work of building a nest des pite my early morning, coffee-in-hand presence on the front porch.  Maybe it is because the long afternoon shadows turn a certain oak lined section of the Arboretum into a magnificent sanctuary that not even those great European cathedrals can fully emulate.   Who knows what it is, but I am finding myself particularly grateful for these glimpses of beauty. For I am convinced that, if there still is beauty, then there is still hope.  And with all that has been going on in the world lately, I could use a little hope.

Summer reading has taken me into the pages of Richard Rohr's new book on Saint Francis and has reintroduced me to the man who lived his life at the intersection of beauty and hope.  Rohr calls Francis a mystic in that Francis "knew that if you can accept that the finite manifests the infinite, and that the physical is the doorway to the spiritual (which is the foundational principal we call "incarnation"), then all you need is right here and right now - in this world.  This is the way to that!  Heaven includes earth.  Time opens you up to the timeless, space opens you up to spacelessness, if you only take them for the clear doorways that they are.  There are not sacred and profane things, places, and moments. There are only sacred and desecrated things, places, and moments - and it is we alone who desecrate them by our blindness and lack of reverence. It is one sacred universe, and we are all a part of it.  You really cannot get any better or more simple than that, in terms of a spiritual vision."  1

    Prayers of the People -

Let us begin our prayer with a moment of silence...

Holy One, giver and lover of life, w e give you praise for the beauty of creation and the hope that is found in your Holy Presence.

Lead us through your clear doorways, that we may come to know you more fully and through you that we may come to know ourselves as we truly are.

Holy One, healer and savior, w e lift up to you all that is broken in our world.

We ask that you pour your healing love into the lives of those who are suffering this day in mind, or body or spirit .  We pray for Angela, ....
May your love bring wholeness.

We ask that you pour your healing love into the places that have been shattered by violence.  We pray for Orlando, Istanbul, Kabul.....
May your love bring peace.

We ask that you poor your healing love into the communities devastated by rising waters and raging fires. We pray for West Virginia, California.....
May your love bring new beginnings.

Holy One, wherever we may be in this moment, we know we are a part of your beloved community knit one to another and to you with your steadfast love.  And so we lift all of these prayers to you, these spoken and so many that remain on unspoken on our hearts into your care.  In your name we pray, Amen.

(If you have a prayer(s) request that you would like to have included in next Friday's eblast, please send it to Pastor Stacy ([email protected]).

Prayer Group will continue to gather in the stillness of the Crocker Chapel  on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. throughout the summer.  This is a "drop-in" time of prayer meaning you are welcome to come whenever you can.  We start with 20 minutes or so of meditative silence before sharing with each other and with God the prayers on our hearts and in our community.  If you are looking for a pocket of peace or a place of stillness in the busyness of your days, we warmly encourage you to try prayer group.  It is remarkably refreshing.
