BECOME A PART OF DENVER'S RICH HISTORY
EXTERIOR SIGNAGE & WAYFINDING
At last month's Five Points Monthly Community Action Meeting, held Saturday, June 4th Zachery Kotel, ArtHouse Design and Tim Welland, Development Manager, Palisade Partners presented the exterior signage and wayfinding design for The Wheatley at Five Points located at 2460 Welton Street.
In general, the approach to the signage for this project has been based on respect for the historic and cultural heritage of the neighborhood, as well as for the architecture and local residents. The design direction pulls from both the brand and the project's use of materials, to create a subtle, refined signage palette that enhances the streetscape and safety of the Welton corridor and adjacent side streets.

Per the suggestion of the city, signage illuminate has been designed in a way that is intended to be respectful of adjacent residential uses. This includes the incorporation of halo illumination, as well as photosensitive light sensors and timers, that allow local ambient light to determine the relative brightness of the signage. In regards to the upper story project identification signage, the same concern for lighting applies.
With retail making up a significant portion of the ground-floor footprint of this project, the upper story sign that reads "The Wheatley Five Points" acts as a destination marker for a new neighborhood anchor.
With research into historic and existing signage precedent, these signs were designed to mimic those from the streetcar days - that is to say it is intended to be visible above the existing light rail (as the light rail blocks the view of the pedestrian level experience when in front of the building), to add a second layer of placemaking to the pedestrian oriented efforts at the ground floor.

INFORMATIONAL PLAQUE AND DURA PLAQUE
The Informational Plaque and DURA Plaque (see below) will be placed on walls by doorway entrance.
PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION
The concept for this public art installaton was developeed with this storied and highly important history in mind. Structurally, this piece will take the form of two, illuminated metal columns, each with a different routed message wrapping the exterior. One column will delineate the history of the local Phyllis Wheatley YWCA and its impotance to the local community. A second column will discuss the history of Phyllis Wheatley herself, as well as her story and its context in the cannon of American slavery and African-American literature. The second column will also contain excerpts from PhyllisWheatley's celebrated poetry, in homage both to the arts, the neighborhood's vibrant roots as the center for Denver's black community, and Wheatley herself.

It is with honor that we invite you to the inaugural 5 Points Brew & BBQ on Saturday, August 6, 2016.
This 1st year event will serve as an opportunity for new comers and long-time residents to connect in the spirit of experiencing fun, good BBQ, brews and easy tunes. Grill-masters, restaurants, breweries, food trucks and carefully selected merchants will line Welton Street between 25th and 28th from 11am to 8:30pm.
Alcohol is served responsibly in special areas of the festival. RTD will provide alternate bus routes for those impacted by Light Rail closure.
