BROUSSARD'S RESTAURANT HONORS ITS FOUNDING YEAR
Chef Neal Swidler Offers Special $19.20 Menu
New Orleans, Louisiana - Broussard's Restaurant is kicking off a special summer menu on Monday, July 4th in celebration of the year the French Quarter restaurant was founded. Executive Chef Neal Swidler is offering a three-course, pre-fixe menu for $19.20 through September. In 1920, Broussard's opened in its historic Vieux Carre location with local Creole cuisine showcasing classic French dishes; today, Chef Swidler continues the tradition with an exotic blend of French and Creole influences.
Broussard's commemoration of nearly a century of fine dining in New Orleans is celebrated with Creole favorites. The pre-fixe menu offers a trio of courses from starters, entrees and dessert. First course choice of soup or salad includes summer tomatoes and arugula with celery root remoulade and spicy boiled shrimp, turtle soup or soup du jour. Traditional entrees include chicken Pontalba with brabant potatoes and béarnaise aioli or trout almondine with lyonnaise potatoes and lemon butter sauce. To complete the meal Chef Swidler offers a boule of ice cream or sorbet with house made pastry and summer fruit.

Chef Swidler also offers a Happy Hour menu daily from 4 - 7 PM in the Empire Bar, which includes over a half dozen appetizer sized dishes for $5 each. The choices include frites fondue, a Louisiana seafood slider, imperial nuts, and more. Bartender Paul Gustings serves Imperil Signatures such as the Napoléon or Bourbon Restoration; tropical concoctions including a Hurricane or El Libertador; traditional New Orleans remedies like the Sazerac or Ramos Gin Fizz, and handcrafted bottled punches and cups.

Broussard's is open for Sunday Brunch, Friday lunch, and dinner nightly. For more information on Broussard's menus please visit www.broussards.com or call (504) 581-3866 to make reservations.

Garlic Crusted Gulf Fish with New Orleans Barbeque Sauce and Yukon Gold Mash
Serves 4

We like using fish like redfish, drum or snapper in this dish

Green Onion Salad
  • 2 bunches green onion
  • 2 C ice water
  • 1 t oil blend
  • 1 T cane vinegar
  • Kosher salt and cracked black pepper to taste

Yukon gold mash
  • 1 ½ lb Yukon gold potatoes
  • ¼ lb butter
  • ½ C warm milk
  • kosher salt and white pepper to taste

New Orleans Barbeque Sauce
  • 1 T butter
  • 1 t garlic, chopped
  • 2 t cracked black pepper
  • 2 t Creole seasoning
  • 3 T Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 T hot sauce (we use Crystal)
  • 1 ea lemon, juice only
  • 1 C amber beer (we use Abita)
  • ½ lb butter, cold, diced
  • 1 t fresh rosemary, minced

Garlic Crusted Fish
  • ¼ C fresh garlic, chopped
  • 2 C flour
  • 2 t kosher salt
  • 2 t cracked black pepper
  • 4 ea fish fillets, skin on (8 oz each)
  • 4 ea egg whites
  • ¼ C vegetable oil
  • kosher salt and cracked black pepper to taste

Masa Fried Oysters
  • ½ C masa harina
  • ½ C flour
  • ¼ C corn starch
  • 1 T Creole seasoning
  • 1 pint oysters
  • oil for frying

To make Green Onion Salad:  Cut green onions into 2" pieces, then julienne and place in ice water to curl.  This will take about 25 minutes.  Remove from water and toss with oil, vinegar, salt and pepper.

To make Yukon Gold Mash:  Boil potatoes until tender, about 45 minutes.  Place potatoes in a large mixing bowl, add butter and smash with a large spoon.  Add warm milk, salt and white pepper.  Mix well, but leave somewhat chunky.

To make New Orleans Barbeque Sauce:  Melt butter in a medium-sized sauté pan and lightly toast garlic.  Increase temperature to high heat and add pepper, Creole seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce and lemon juice.  Stir well, then deglaze with beer and reduce by ½.  Lower heat to medium-low and add cold butter one piece at a time, whisking constantly and adding additional butter only after all butter has incorporated into the sauce.  Sauce will thicken and should coat your spoon.  Stir fresh rosemary and keep warm.

To make Garlic Crusted Fish:  Combine garlic, flour, salt and pepper in the work bowl of a food processor and pulse until finely mixed.  Season both sides of fish fillets with salt and pepper.  Dredge fillets skin side down in egg whites, then press into garlic flour.  Preheat about ¼ C oil (depending on the size of your pan) in a large saute pan over high heat.  Place fillets, skin side down, in pan and reduce heat to medium.  Cook fish until fillets are cooked almost through and crust is a nice golden brown.  Flip fillets and finish cooking all the way through.

To Fry Oysters:  Preheat oil to 350°.  Mix masa harina, flour, cornstarch and Creole seasoning in a large bowl.  Dredge oysters in flour and shake off any excess.  Fry oysters in several batches and drain on paper towels.  You may want to fry one oyster first to test the temperature of your oil.  A perfectly fried oyster should be golden brown and hot through to the center.  If your oil is too hot, the oysters will burn quickly.  If your oil is not hot enough, the oysters will be greasy.  Fry oysters right before you are ready to serve.

To Serve:  Spoon Yukon gold mash in the center of each serving plate.  Place fish fillet skin side-up on top of mash.  Ladle barbeque sauce around fillet and place masa fried oysters around fish.  Top with green onion and squeeze fresh lemon juice. Enjoy!

August 4 - Bruce Daigrepont
Music came to Bruce at an early age, and in the most traditional manner--handed down from father to son. When he was growing up, no family gathering was complete without a little playing and singing. His father picked the guitar, "Carter Family-style," while his Uncle Alton lent a remarkable voice to the traditional Cajun songs and old-time country ballads. Bruce Daigrepont almost single-handedly has popularized Cajun music and Cajun dancing in cosmopolitan New Orleans.  For more information about the band, visit brucedaigrepont.com

August 11 - Julio and Cesar
Originally from Guatemala, Julio and Cesar Herrera have been in New Orleans for over 30 years.  They describe their music as constantly evolving, attributing this, in part, to their exposure from an early age to many cultures.  For more information about the band, visit julioandcesar.com.

August 18 - Pfister Sisters
Holley Bendtsen, Yvette Voelker, Debbie Davis and Amasa Miller comprise one of the few groups that represent the New Orleans swing era, with their recreation of the Boswell Sisters arrangements, and the only act featuring vocal jazz harmony. Pontchartrain Hotel

Philip Melancon returns to the Bayou Bar at the Pontchartrain Hotel this Thursday. He will be at the legendary piano every Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning at 8 for . . . well, his last stint lasted twenty years.
The refurbished Pontchartrain is beautiful. The new investment group dropped $10 million dollars in it , upgrading the Bayou Bar, Silver Whistle and Caribbean Room. The rooms have also been addressees and the old penthouses are now incorporated into a swank rooftop bar. It's quite the entertainment venue, highly recommended.
Here's your options. The Caribbean Room and all food services are overseen by John Besh.  He has included several favorites of the 'Train including Mile High Pie. A bar menu is also available. The Silver Whistle is operating for morning and lunch guests. Blueberry muffins are back in the basket. The Bayou Bar has been up-graded. New floor, bar, seating, but still very much the feel of the old place. I am Philip and, of course, I'll be at the bar wrapped, drink sodden Steinway.
It is a fabulous night to visit this part of New Orleans history, part of which so many of us have taken part in. Come back and make some more.

June and July are blueberry picking months! With 5 farms within driving distance from New Orleans, a blueberry picking trip with your children is a must do this summer.

Picking your own berries is a really fun time for everyone in your family. Even the little ones can get in on the action. Besides just popping the delicious fruit right in your mouth, you can have a great time in the kitchen with your kids making blueberry smoothies, muffins, pie, cobbler, cookies, ice cream and more. You can also put it on your cereal or in your yogurt.

We all know blueberries taste good, but did you know they contain the most antioxidants of any fruit? Plus they have been proven to reduce DNA damage which helps to protect against aging and cancer!

A 1 cup serving (148 grams) of blueberries contains:

Fiber: 4 grams.
Vitamin C: 24% of the RDA.
Vitamin K: 36% of the RDA.
Manganese: 25% of the RDA.
Small amounts of various other nutrients.

Blueberries are also about 85% water, and an entire cup contains only 84 calories, with 15 grams of carbohydrates.

For the optimal picking experience, go in the early morning to avoid the extreme heat, wear sunscreen, and a hat. It's rained so much lately you should definitely wear your rubber boots.

Each farm listed below has there own instructions on how things are done on their farm so be sure to check out their sites and even give them a call if you have questions. Several only take cash or check for payment.

(New Orleans) - FestiGals today announced that the legendary Angela Hill, TV and radio broadcaster, will serve as the 2016 Grand Diva for the New Orleans festival that celebrates, empowers and connects women. In her role as FestiGals Grand Diva, Angela Hill will be crowned on Thursday, July 28, and she will lead the parade of partygoers on Saturday, July 30, during the sixth annual Stiletto Stroll through the streets of the Warehouse District.

FestiGals, which is slated for July 28-30 at the JW Marriot, also includes the "Queen of Creole Cuisine," Leah Chase. This year, FestiGals will host the inaugural New Orleans Women's Conference which will take place on Friday, July 29. Highlights of the Women's Conference include a passionate and energetic keynote address by Carla Harris, a Vice Chairman at Morgan Stanley; a panel entitled "Ladies Who Make Music" featuring Germaine Bazzle, Stephanie Jordan and Helen Gillet; a session about "Ladies Who Make Parades" including Virginia Saussy with the Krewe of Muses, Julie Lea with the Krewe of Nyx and Camille Baldassar of the Pussyfooters; and the spirited Sallie Ann Glassman will explain the Haitian Vodou religion and its connection to New Orleans while later leading an actual Haitian Vodou ceremony.

The expanded downtown Stiletto Stroll offers women the opportunity to participate in an authentic New Orleans walking parade. This year's Stiletto Stroll is aiming to become the world's largest all women's second line complete with the all-female Universe Brass Band, entertainers and dance groups. The crowds will saunter from a pre-party at Harrah's through the streets of the Warehouse District to Mardi Gras World where revelers will enjoy the sounds of Rockin' Dopsie at the dazzling After-Glow Party. FestiGals is donating all proceeds of the event to the New Orleans Family Justice Center which helps families and individuals suffering from domestic violence. The parade has a GLO theme, "shining light on domestic violence."

The move will help FQFI achieve its goal to grow Satchmo SummerFest, which began in 2001 as a way to commemorate Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong's 100th birthday. Since its inception, the event - previously held at the Louisiana State Museum's Old U.S. Mint - has turned into New Orleans' premier traditional jazz festival, annually attracting an average of 40,000 attendees. "As we celebrate the Festival's 16th anniversary - and Louis Armstrong's 116th birthday - we are thrilled to move into New Orleans' most beautiful, iconic park. Like Louis Armstrong, Jackson Square is beloved and integral to New Orleans' history and culture. The new location, along with our incredible symposium panelists, traditional jazz musicians, great restaurants, and special events will make this year's event incredibly memorable, historic, and high profile." said Marci Schramm, Executive Director of French Quarter Festivals, Inc. Satchmo SummerFest is held annually on the weekend closest to August 4th - Louis Armstrong's birthday.
Three Full Days of Music and a New Indoor Stage
Attendees can look forward to festival fare from some of New Orleans' best restaurants, unique cultural events like a traditional jazz mass and second lines, a Trumpet Tribute and Birthday Party for Louis Armstrong, and children's activities. Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron also will bring three full days of music, featuring dozens of New Orleans' finest traditional and contemporary jazz musicians and brass bands.
Introducing the New 'Back o' Town' Stage
This year Satchmo SummerFest grows with the addition of the new 'Back o' Town' stage located inside the air-conditioned Louisiana State Museum's Arsenal (600 St. Peter Street, 2nd floor). The 'Back o' Town' will feature a dance floor, NOLA Jitterbugs, and live dance music on Saturday and Sunday. Inside Jackson Square, two additional stages (the 'Red Beans and Ricely Yours Stage' and 'Cornet Chop Suey Stage') will provide three days of musical performances. The lineup includes Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Bill Summers & Jazalsa, Kermit Ruffins, Brass-A-Holics, Catherine Russell (debut), Yoshio Toyama and the Dixie Saints, Jeremy Davenport, Trumpet Tribute to Louis Armstrong featuring James Andrews, Victor Goines (debut), Wendell Brunious, and many more. Visit fqfi.org/satchmo to view the full music schedule.
Satchmo Symposium to Include Pulitzer Panel Celebrating the 100-Year Anniversary of the Pulitzer
The Satchmo Symposium, three days of fascinating seminars with internationally-respected Satchmo scholars and musicians, will be held inside Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré. This year's Symposium includes a special panel developed in partnership with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and Pulitzer: Celebrating 100 years of Pulitzer - From New Orleans to the World Stage: The Artistic Journeys of Louis Armstrong and Wynton Marsalis. The panel will explore and contrast the approaches, outlooks, and outputs of both artists - as well as how they were influenced by New Orleans; it will be moderated by New Orleans journalist (NOLA.com|The Times-Picayune) and historian James Karst.

On Friday, August 5, Grammy Award-winning artist Catherine Russell will present From Satchmo's Knee to a Grammy. Russell grew up in New York City as the daughter of musical royalty: her father was pianist, bandleader, and longtime Louis Armstrong musical director Luis Russell; her mother, Carline Ray, was a celebrated artist who performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Ruth Brown, among others. Catherine, who met Louis Armstrong when she was very young, has toured the world as a backup singer with such top artists as David Bowie, Jackson Browne, and Cyndi Lauper - and over the last 10 years has released five critically-acclaimed CDs (and earned a Grammy) as a solo artist and bandleader. Catherine makes her Satchmo SummerFest debut on stage at Festival and will talk about her fascinating musical heritage and wide-ranging career with interviewer Fred Kasten.

Author Mick Carlon presents A Conversation with Jack Bradley. Bradley was one of Pops' most trusted friends as well as the 'photo-taker' of some of the most beautifully candid Armstrong photographs ever captured. Bradley traveled with Armstrong for years, taking photos and collecting an incredible collection of artifacts which were recently donated to the Louis Armstrong House Museum and Archives in New York. Jack, now 82 and retired on Cape Cod, sat down for a wide-ranging interview with Carlon about his deep friendship with the man the world knew and loved as 'Satchmo.' The recently-recorded interview will be shown on Sunday, August 7. A full Satchmo SummerFest Symposium schedule can be found at fqfi.org/satchmo.
'Spirit of Satch Awards' and Other Special Events
The 16th anniversary of Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron also brings the return of the 'Spirit of Satch' Awards. Winners are champions of jazz and New Orleans music in a variety of areas, including 'Jazz Education', 'Keeping Traditional Jazz Alive and Well', and 'Preserving our Musical Legacy'. The winners will be announced at festival on Friday, August 5 during the opening ceremony on the 'Red Beans and Ricely Yours' stage.

In addition to music and education, Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron showcases New Orleans' most important indigenous traditions, such as a Sunday morning Jazz Mass at the historic St. Augustine Church in Treme; a traditional second line parade; and traditional jazz dance lessons. Other special events include an opening reception at the beautiful and historic Omni Royal Orleans Hotel (the official hotel of Satchmo SummerFest), a special Louis Armstrong film screening at Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré, 'Pops' Playhouse' - a dedicated children's area, and a Trumpet Tribute and birthday celebration to close the festival. The festival also features authentic Creole cuisine from the area's finest restaurants to create 'Red Bean Alley.' Daily admission is $5 (children 12 and under are free).  For more information on FQFI festivals and events visit fqfi.org or call 504-522-5730.

New Orleans, Louisiana - French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) proudly announces the 2016 Satchmo SummerFest poster artist, Terry Marks, Sr. A New Orleans native, Marks is president of the Metairie Art Guild, as well as an active member of the New Orleans Art Association and Jefferson Art Guild. After obtaining a degree in Advertising Art, he opened a sign business in 1976 and his work can be seen all over the region. The original poster art, a vibrant portrait of Louis Armstrong with a retro, sub-tropical vibe, was carved from wood salvaged from the old Dixie Brewery. "The wood was over 200 years old. I felt that only a New Orleans legend such as Louis Armstrong would be a fitting subject for this piece," Marks said.

Festival-goers will have the opportunity to meet the artist during the 16th annual Satchmo SummerFest, which takes place August 5-7 at Jackson Square. Satchmo SummerFest is the premier American jazz festival dedicated to the life, legacy, and music of New Orleans' native son, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.

Sincerely,

Frank Stansbury
