Ohno! So Many Opportunities for Improvement!

Many of us were taught in school about Taiichi Ohno, who is commonly referred to as the father of the Toyota Production System. One of Taiichi Ohno's foundational tools, the chalk circle or Ohno circle, can help point us in the right direction. Ohno would draw a circle on the manufacturing floor, ask a manager to stand in the circle, and then simply tell them to "watch." Hours later, Ohno would return to the circle and ask, "What did you see?" If
a manager answered, "No issues", Ohno would tell them to look closer until they find a gap between the actual and target condition. This chalk circle practice gives insight on where improvements are needed. There is a great need
in healthcare for our expertise. All you need to do is look. Draw a circle, open your eyes, observe, and improve. Read the article.

Podcast #252 - Jordan Peck, from MIT to the VA to Maine Health

Mark Graban's guest for his  Lean Blog podcast episode #252 is Jordan Peck, a Senior Director in the Center for Performance Improvement at MaineHealth and Maine Medical Center.  Graban says, "Jordan and I first met when he was a graduate student at MIT and was involved with the Lean Advancement Initiative (and I was working basically across the street at the Lean Enterprise Institute). At MIT, he earned a PhD in Engineering Systems and Health Care Systems. Jordan and I have continued to cross paths every year at the Society for Health Systems annual conference. His career has taken him to the Veterans Health Administration and now into the private sector at Maine Health, as we discuss in the podcast."
In search of consensus on reducing clinical variation

Brent James MD, has  summarized it well, describing the process of "shared baselines" that is used at Intermountain Healthcare for many high impact diseases and conditions include newborn deliveries, pneumonia, acute respiratory syndrome, and prophylactic use of antibiotics in the OR.
Why Health Care Tech Is Still So Bad

In anticipation for his recently released new book,  The Digital Doctor: Hope, Hype, and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine's Computer Age, Dr. Bob Watcher  wrote this op-ed on health IT today. The topic of unanticipated consequences of health IT appears more and more in the news of healthcare professionals. We've pinned the problems on clunky software, flawed implementations, absurd regulations, and bad karma. It was all of those things, but it was also something far more complicated, and far more interesting.

Upcoming Webinars

Patient Care Ergonomics: Why OSHA Includes It as a Top Priority
Presented by AEC GOErgo Conference Committee
OPEN TO All
July 7 | 2 p.m. Eastern time

Presenter: Mary W. Matz, MSPH, Veterans Health Administration.
This presentation will delve into why OSHA continues to target manual patient handling as a serious ergonomic risk. Currently, there is a National Emphasis Program (NEP) that includes Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM). This webinar will discuss the biomechanics of why caregivers are at risk of injury due to manual patient handling and what control measures are available to decrease that risk.

Our Expanding Circles of Systems Engineering Influence
Presented by IISE's Industry Advisory Board
OPEN TO ALL
July 21 | 2 p.m. Eastern time

Presenter: Kevin McManus, chief excellence officer, Great Systems.
As technology continues to help make our work, and life, systems more tangible by the day, the potential roles for, and influence of, industrial and systems engineers expands as well. In just over one hundred years, we have gone from optimizing the individual elements for specific work tasks to designing algorithms and apps that may help improve the sustainability of our planet.

The Aging Workforce and Impacts on Ergonomic Design
Presented by AEC GOErgo Conference Committee
OPEN TO ALL
Aug. 4 | 2 p.m. Eastern time

Presenter: Blake McGowan, CPE, managing consultant & ergonomics engineer, Humantech.    For the younger worker, the physical capabilities for job duties are well-defined and have resulted in the publication of several design standards. Unfortunately, the physical capabilities of the older worker have not been studied as extensively, and therefore design standards for older workers are harder to find. The purpose of this presentation is to summarize the most relevant physiology research and the cutting-edge ergonomic design guidelines for the aging workforce.

Soft Skills for Leaders of Change in Healthcare
Presented by Society for Health Systems
OPEN TO ALL
Aug. 9 | 2 p.m. Eastern time
