"As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem."
(Luke 9:51)

Dear St. Paul's,

Last Sunday I preached from Luke Chapter 9 about the cost of following Jesus.  And as we saw, the cost is high.  It will cost you everything.  Over the course of my life, I have been shocked at times by what the Lord has called me to sacrifice.  My life looks very different today than it did 30 years ago, but I can say without hesitation that following Christ is by far the greatest investment that this world has to offer.
Pr. Jon, Bp. Ron & Jon Day at Groundbreaking Ceremony
This passage about the high cost of following Jesus is introduced by this very interesting episode in which Jesus "resolutely set out for Jerusalem."  The Greek actually says that Jesus "steadfastly set his face toward Jerusalem."  Some might say "His jaw was set."  It's an arcane expression, so I can understand why contemporary translations modernize the verbiage.  Even though Jesus sets the standard for being humble and compassionate, neither did He bend when it came to pursuing the Cross.

Robin at Teacher Commissioning
As I studied the passage, I became amazed as the Lord reminded me of how often God's Word speaks of the importance of the position of a person's face.

In Proverbs 4:27 we are told "not to look to the left or to the right."  Just like Jesus, we are to keep our eyes fixed like a laser beam on God's call on our lives.  There will be many distractions which will tempt our eyes to wander.  We are not to be "double-minded", but by God's grace and by the power of the Holy Spirit we keep putting one foot in front of the other, moving toward God's goal for us.  We are told that in the Last Days we are to "stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." (Luke 21:28)

Sea of Galilee
In this season in the life of St. Paul's with Robin's retirement, the building of the Flamevine Church, and the Israel trip, we want to "steadfastly set our face toward Jerusalem."  This is an exciting time when we will see God move in miraculous ways once again.

Thanks for joining us on the journey!

Gratefully in Christ,

Pr. Jon

SURVIVOR CAMP

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."    Matt. 6:21

The Fifth Annual Survivor Camp is about three weeks away! The children of St. Paul's and many of their friends are getting excited.  Survivor Camp is a very unique camp based on the TV series, "Survivor", but filled with God's Word.  As the children engage in new experiences and attempt daily challenges, they will come to realize that "heavenly treasures" are more important than "earthly treasures."  The child who accumulates the most points during the week is declared the "Soul Survivor."  They win an awesome t-shirt and $50.00!

Over 20 children will be participating.  Many of the children are returning for a third, fourth and even fifth time!  They are all looking forward to new challenges and, of course, some of their favorites.  I asked some of the children what they were most looking forward to and following are some of their answers.

Zach said "The food challenge!  I wonder what weird things we will have to eat this year!  No bugs, please!"   While his brother Adam said, "I really like building the rafts."  Addy can't wait for the rope challenge and Noelle really enjoyed the moving beams.  While one of last year's participants, Ryan, said "I want to WIN!"

So mark your calendars!  Beginning Monday, July 25th thru Friday,  July 29 th , plan to stop by The Prestige Hotel and see the children not only face new challenges and learn new skills, but examine their hearts.
