Simple actions to help the environment

R ecycling is one of the easiest actions people take to help the environment. When we recycle we divert waste from the landfill which extends the life of landfills and reduces methane emissions (a potent greenhouse gas). Recycling brings new uses to tossed items, which conserves virgin materials (like trees), energy, and water. According to waste studies, 50% of the trash we throw in our black garbage bins can be diverted by recycling or composting.

Check out these tips for what to take where:
  • Paper, plastic, and glass - throw in blue recycling bins
  • Food waste, soiled napkins, paper plates, paper towels, paper food containers - throw in green composting bins
  • Paint and painting supplies, cleaning products, pesticides and other chemicals, car parts, and fluorescent and CFL lightbulbs - schedule Household Hazardous Waste pick-up, call (800) 449-7587 or email [email protected]
  • Batteries - drop off at select sites including Burlingame City Hall and Home Depot
  • Eyeglasses - drop off at Burlingame City Hall
  • E-waste - drop off at Green Citizen in Burlingame
  • Bulky items like mattresses and appliances - schedule a pick-up with Recology by calling at (650) 595-3900 or drop off at the Shoreway Environmental Center in San Carlos.

sawyercampSawyer Camp Trail Reopens
Starting Saturday, July 2 and continuing through July

The section of the Sawyer Camp Trail that has been temporarily closed for habitat restoration activity will be open again for daily use, starting Saturday, July 2, and continuing through the month of July.

The trail will be open every day, sunrise to sunset. However, users are requested to be on the lookout for vehicles on weekday evenings, after 7:00 p.m., when we will be hauling away vegetation.  Though the work schedule initially called for closures on weekday evenings, we have adjusted it so that vegetation will be off-hauled while the trail is still open.  Please make room for the vehicles to pass safely during those periods.

The second temporary partial closure (and the last of the long ones) for the habitat restoration project is scheduled to begin in August.  Updates on future closure dates will follow. For more information visit Sfwater.org/peninsula, call (866) 973-1476 or email [email protected], [email protected].

'The Sharing Economy" Talk
Thursday, July 14 at 7:00 p.m. (Note date change; previously July 28)
Burlingame Library

Neal Gorenflo, founder of Shareable, a nonprofit supporting the global sharing movement, will discuss the two sides of the sharing economy: one led by "disruptive" for-profit companies like Uber and Airbnb and the other with a strong public interest bent. He'll explain how to shape this trend to address the most pressing challenges that communities face. He'll also give examples of unusual sharing practices including nanny sharing, peer-to-peer car sharing that pays for the car, and international home exchanges where no money is exchanged.

"The Sharing Economy" will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lane Room at the Burlingame Public Library, 480 Primrose Road. Admission is free, and door prizes will be given out, including extras for those who don't drive alone to this event.
