End of Session Agreement on Supportive Housing
$150 million in new capital resources available toward 1,200 units of supportive housing in this fiscal year.

The Governor and NYS Legislative leaders closed out the 2016 session on June 18th with an agreement to make $150 million in new capital resources available toward creating 1,200 units of supportive housing in this fiscal year. This capital funding is intended to complement the recently released request for proposals for services and operating to ensure timely completion of the first 1,200 units of the state's plan to create 6,000 units of supportive housing over the next five years.

According to a press release issued by the Governor's Office, "Today's agreement includes the execution of a memorandum of understanding to make more than $570 million in state resources available to advance capital construction and operating on the first 1,200 units of supportive housing under the Governor's sweeping $20 billion Housing and Homelessness plan." However, only $150 million is new resources, the remaining $420 million includes the existing service and operating funding, bonds and tax credits.

The Sydelle Opens in the East Tremont Neighborhood of the Bronx
New residence provides 107 apartments to a mix of low-income and formerly homeless families and individuals.

For decades the nation's largest provider of services in supportive housing, the Center for Urban Community Services opened their third CUCS-developed-and-owned residence June 6th, The Sydelle, in the East Tremont neighborhood of the Bronx. Named for a longstanding supporter of CUCS, Sydelle Ostberg, the Sydelle provides 107 apartments to a mix of low-income and formerly homeless families and individuals.

CUCS Board Chair and CSH Founder Julie Sandorf kicked off the event along with CUCS President and CEO Tony Hannigan. They were followed by a moving address from CUCS tenant Laverne Rogers who told those assembled, "I used to live in fear.  Now I feel safe...My neighbors come and check in on me after I've been in the hospital ...and I'm filling out job applications!"

NYC Programs Help Buildings Go Green
These new programs include two retrofit programs aimed at lowering utility costs, increasing sustainability, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The New York City Mayor's Office of Sustainability recently created a slew of new programs to help buildings 'go green' including two retrofit programs aimed at lowering utility costs, increasing sustainability, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

NYC Retrofit Accelerator is a citywide program geared towards large buildings that comply with the City's local building energy laws and buildings currently financed by the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) or NYC Housing Development Corporation (HDC). The program offers free advisory services on implementing water and energy efficiency upgrades. The program offers direct assistance in coordinating compliance with local building energy laws, including Local Laws 87, 88, and the City's heating oil regulations; interpret energy audits; prioritize energy and water upgrades; and navigate financing and incentive options.
