MEET JOHN WALKER - tennis enthusiast and RC Tennis volunteer from Reidsville NC
Where did you learn to play tennis?   My love for tennis began at the age of 14 in Cincinnati.  I saw Bjorn Borg play for the first time and he became my hero, although I acted more like John McEnroe.  I bought a Donnay racket and I was hooked.  When I was 16 several accidents sidelined my tennis game and I began to play the drums...then golf.

And now you're "into tennis again"?  Enter my kids, Abby and Baily.  About a year and a half ago, my oldest daughter Abby began asking me about tennis.  She was 9 years old at the time.   I was introduced to Shelby and we went to the first Rockingham County Junior Team Tennis meeting.   Abby seemed excited about playing so we joined the league last spring.  She had never hit a ball and she struggled.  We practiced and and her interest grew.  After the spring league we were playing on a more regular basis and I began to volunteer to help more and more. She was invited to the USTA's 10U Early Development Camp at the Cary Tennis Center last summer and had a chance to play with more experienced players here.  She loved it.

What is something most people don't know about you?   No one would ever guess but I also am a Girl Scout Leader here in Reidsville.

During this time we have seen the interest in Rockingham county grow.  We have been fortunate to have Shelby bring tennis to our area.  That is one of the biggest reasons I haven't played and gave up the sport is that there was simply no one on the courts.  Now we are seeing the courts full of our next generation of tennis players.  I have been blessed to be given a bigger and bigger role in working with the kids.  It is one of my favorite things to do.   So I am excited to see the future for Rockingham County Tennis!!

Winter in the time for planning and networking with our "sister" Community Tennis Associations across North Carolina. Thanks to USTA NC, I've attended USTA Tennis Weekend in Pinehurst NC and the upcoming Executive Director/Community Coordinator's workshop in Charlotte.   Our RC Tennis Board of Directors met in January. We have a great plan for 2016.  Stay tuned.
