President's Message

Did that really just happen?!

June was an historic month for ADAO, full of politics and progress. The TSCA reform bill loomed over us for nearly the whole month. The passage process moved much more slowly than we'd expected, but when President Obama finally signed into law the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21 st Century Act, ADAO was there representing the asbestos victim community. President Obama publicly acknowledged the deadly danger of asbestos-something no sitting president had ever done.

When Doug Larkin and I co-founded ADAO in 2004, we never imagined this little nonprofit could have such an impact in Washington, but thanks to you all, ADAO was heard and our voices made a difference! ADAO will remain a stakeholder throughout the implementation process; keep an eye out for ways to get involved in the coming months.

We also published the best-performing blog of ADAO's 12-year history in June. "Donald Trump and the Art of the Crooked Asbestos Deal" was shared more than 150 times and got north of 1500 clicks within the first 24 hours of publishing!

It was an honor to join our international colleagues and allies this month at the U.K.'s Safety and Health Expo, AFeVA and CGIL press conference in Casale Monferrato, and Action Mesothelioma Day.

July promises to be a great month; we're especially excited about the Lawyers, Guns, and Photos event that honors Warren Zevon and fundraises for ADAO.  Details and link to buy tickets for the July 7th event are in our blog. I hope to see many of you there!

ADAO CONFERENCE VIDEO

July's featured video comes from our 2016 Asbestos Awareness and Prevention Conference. ADAO was honored to have Paul Broedeur as the keynote speaker, and his speech was truly a highlight of the weekend. As a staff writer at The New Yorker for nearly 40 years, Brodeur wrote the first major account of the health hazards and injustice associated with exposure to asbestos. His work won the National Magazine Award, a Sidney Hillman Foundation Award, and awards from the American Association of Trial Lawyers and the American Bar Association. Enjoy expert insight from one of the strongest champions the anti-asbestos movement has ever had.
