Less Screen Time and More Sunscreen
AskBarbara
Hi AskBarbara,

I realize young children aren't known for logical decisions, but my 5-year-old daughter has always seemed to have trouble grasping the concept of weather-appropriate behavior.

As a 3-year-old, she often wanted to wear shorts and a t-shirt in the dead of January - and long-sleeves and pants when it was 90 degrees in the summer.

We've gotten past that phase, fortunately, but a different problem has arisen at age 5. She doesn't seem to grasp that beautiful Saturday afternoons don't grow on trees in this state, and that they must be taken advantage of. I try to explain this when she wants to sit and watch Barbie YouTube videos and/or play inside on a beautiful sunny day, but with varying degrees of success.

Most Minnesotans wouldn't use their free time to go inside a building between May and August if you paid them - because they know what's coming after Labor Day - but how do you explain this concept to a kid?

JFCS CEO

What does it mean to be relevant? Is it anticipating the future, or keeping a focused eye on the moment? The answer is "Yes!" At Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis we pride ourselves on offering services, programs, care, and support that are essential and usable today, while always looking for innovations that will keep us relevant to "tomorrow's" users.

This requires strategic conversations, genuine and honest inquiry, and flexibility to meet the needs identified by clients, caregivers and professionals. Lately, we've asked a lot of our supporters. We've surveyed many of you at various times to learn what it is that makes JFCS an organization that you trust, engage with, receive help from, and support.
Helping with basic needs since the Great Depression

For the past 80 years, Sam "Chick" Schenfeld has maintained that Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis enabled his family to survive the Great Depression.

Sam, 90, was born in 1926 and grew up on Minneapolis' Northside. The son of emigrants, his mother spoke no English and his father was a peddler. Like many others, his family fell on hard times during the Depression. JFCS helped provide them with food, vouchers for clothing, and coal to keep their modest home warm in the winter. Read Sam's story here.

Food and Basic Needs and Emergency Financial Assistanc e are just two of JFCS' program areas that provide assistance with critical essential needs to thousands in our com m unity each year. When you support GIVE2016, your contrib u tion helps sustain crucial programs and services that strengthen our community. Please consider making your gift today.

Introducing 2 fun,
new volunteer opportunities!

Deikel Family AlterCare, our adult day program, located in St. Louis Park, needs energetic volunteers like you this summer!

Here's how you can help:

  • Do you sing, dance or play a musical instrument? Share your talents and musical gifts with our AlterCare program participants and add joy to their day. Flexible timing between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., M-F. This is a great way to share your love of music with older adults. Good for individuals or small groups.
  • And, who doesn't love a good party? Be a birthday party host for our program participants once or once each month! Birthday parties are a great way to recognize the uniqueness of our participants. Help serve birthday treats, lead a game of Bingo and celebrate the day! Appropriate for a group of 2-6 individuals.
To volunteer, contact Mike McCloskey, Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected] or 952-939-1511.

Got Hammer?

  • Our Senior Services clients need a few handy people to help them with basic repairs in their homes. If you can change a lightbulb (and like it!) this job is for you. Flexible hours based on your schedule.

If you are interested, contact Deb Savitt, Community Involvement Manager at [email protected] or 952-542-4859
