Does Dry Cleaning Solvent, Perc, Cause Cancer? First of all, we use the environmentally friendly dry cleaning solvent, Hydrocarbon. It causes no harm to you or the environment. There has been a lot of negative publicity the past several years about the dry cleaning solvent, perchloroethylene (perc). Perc solvent has been the most popular dry clean solvent in most dry cleaners for over 50 years. Extremely high levels of perc have been proven to be toxic to humans and can cause effects on the nervous system, liver, and kidneys. Most dry cleaners that use perc will claim that it is safe, because it has not been proven to cause cancer in humans. They will also tell you that careful scientific examination of claims show that it was the unique characteristics of rodents and the very high exposures to perc that led to their cancers, and that the results of such laboratory animal studies do not apply to humans. Tests are currently inconclusive, but do you want to take the chance of getting cancer later? RECYCLE!
