KeepRoadsSafe.org site educates about road maintenance funding shortfall

When it comes to Washington County roads, safety is the No. 1 priority. However road maintenance funding - primarily from gas taxes and fees - is not meeting the growing need for road, bridge and culvert repair and replacement.

Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT) is educating the public about the safety implications of the maintenance funding shortfall. LUT has launched a new website, KeepRoadsSafe.org, focused on the effect the maintenance funding shortfall is having on the safety of our roads. The site includes the video Maintenance: Keeping Our Roads and Bridges Safe which summarizes the issues.

"We are committed to keeping the roads in Washington County safe for all travelers," said Andrew Singelakis, director of LUT. "We want to make sure that people understand the safety implications of delaying road and bridge maintenance."

Public comment sought on Rural Tourism Study report

The Rural Tourism Study report, compiled by independent consultants and Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT), is available for public comment through Sept. 30.

Staff will report on comments received and seek direction from the Board of Commissioners in the fall. Currently there is no land use ordinance tied to the findings of this report. Public comment on the report will help to inform any future potential land use ordinance development related to rural tourism.

Printed copies of the study are available at Washington County libraries and through each Citizen Participation Organization (CPO). A limited number of copies are available for a fee at Washington County Land Use & Transportation, 155 N. 1st Ave., Suite 350, Hillsboro.  Website
