Dear Friend of Massachusetts Center for the Book,
Last Friday, Governor Charlie Baker vetoed 100% of spending on Massachusetts Center for the Book in FY2017, effectively shutting its doors.

The Legislature can override the Governor's veto, beginning with a two-thirds vote in the House tomorrow, July 14.
Let your voice be heard!

Please contact your senator and representative asap and urge them to support Massachusetts Center for the Book  (Line 7000-9508) in the override process.  Click here to  confirm the information for your state legislators.

Along with our regular programming, MCB has developed many new literacy initiatives and programs that support and promote the cause of books and reading and enhance the outreach potential of Massachusetts libraries.

Spread the word

We are counting on our friends and supporters to help keep Massachusetts Center for the Book open.  Without an override, Massachusetts will be the only state in the nation without a Center for the Book.  A press release may be viewed here.

The Governor initially proposed level-funding for MCB in his budget ($200,000) and the line item remained in the compromise version of the budget finalized by the Legislature in June.

While not eliminating other arts and humanities line items, funding for cultural organizations was severely slashed.  Massachusetts depends on these nonprofits to enhance the educational and arts opportunities our Commonwealth is known for, particularly youth programs.  They also drive the commerce and tourism of the state, so closely tied to academic and cultural institutions.

Please join us in advocating for book culture in Massachusetts.  As always, we appreciate your support of Mass Center for the Book,

Sharon Shaloo, Executive Director
