MESSAGE FROM JOHN
June was a very busy and productive month. On the invitation of the Dayton CVB, I flew to Wright Brothers ( KMGY) to scope out the area and to discuss future plans. Then off to Nashville to meet with members at Summer NAMM where FMA is picking up traction.  Finally, I found out why they call it Heaven's Landing... what a beautiful place in Clayton Georgia!

I'm very impressed that the HangarJam concept is taking root. We have firm plans for one in Maryland and Ohio with ones in Colorado, California, and Florida taking shape. These could very well become routine in the future as folks realize how much fun they are. I suspect they can double as meetings too. A great way to bring folks together who love aviation and music!

We have been a NAMM Foundation partner for three years now. and our attendance at Summer NAMM has been growing. We
FMs at Summer NAMM
Bill Marshall - Kat Olson - John - Brent Purcell
have also been fortunate to make headway with those who share our duality in music and aviation. For three years I have roamed the vast convention center meeting with and informing folks about FMA and the opportunities that exist. Look for an announcement, soon, of a new corporate member and perhaps sponsor.

Out of the 10 members who attended, four of us gathered for a quick breakfast and photo op. Brian Marshall, Jim Thomas, Sarah Coffelt, and Kat's friend were unable to make the early hour call. We were able to catch the Charlie Daniels Band and I hear Paul Leim's show at 3rd and Lindsley, "All Shook Up", was a hit.

As the biggest aviation event of the year blazes on the radar,
we are trying to lass o the details. You will find listed them on the FMA website. There are plenty of music opportunities and plenty of folks who are willing to step up to organize. If you are into open mic and jamming, John Vining has that covered at the Thursday evening FMA Open Mic/Jam as well as others in various camps throughout the area like Paul Lamb is organizing in the north 40. Do you sing? New member Jim Walker has created the Oshkosh Choir. Are you an instrumentalist? Elton Eisel heads up the EAA AirVenture Concert Band. If performing is your thing, that is happening too.

We hope you get a chance to visit with all of the FMA corporate members who will be exhibiting at OSH. Please stop by to thank them for their support. Look for booth numbers for each as soon as I receive them to be listed on the website.

So proud to of corporate member JSfirm.com. They have partnered with EAA to promote EAA's week long job Fair at OSH this year. T he event will take place during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016, The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration.  Abbey Hutter, marketing coordinator for JSfirm.com, said, "We are more than happy to support EAA. Their dedication to growing participation in aviation is something JSfirm.com firmly stands behind." She added, "There are so many job opportunities in the industry right now."   All Job Fair activities will take place in AirVenture's Aviation Gateway Park, July 25-31, 9a.m.-5p.m.  All job seekers are encouraged to visit the web page at EAA.org for up-to-date information. You can visit Abbey and the JSfirm.com team at their booth C30 anytime!

Want to see where to find the lowest priced fuel and best deals heading towards OSH? Corporate member GlobalAir.com has that covered.  The Oshkosh 2016 Fuel Deals page marks the sixth year that GlobalAir.com has provided this seasonal webpage for their visitors.  "Since every year there are thousands of aircraft flying all over the nation for AirVenture, the Oshkosh Specials Page has become a great resource for everyone involved. When we first started the page we got perhaps a dozen FBOs that posted. This year already we have 25 specials and we're just getting started. If I were to guess, we should have close to 70-80 specials by July 20-22 when everyone starts their trip." -Jeff Carrithers, President/CEO GlobalAir,com .

I hope to see many at OSH this year to renew old friendships while making new ones.

Stay safe, become engaged, active, and above all... Blue Skies!

Sincerely,
John

seminar on a topic near and dear to FMA members: "Music in the Skies: What Pilots Can Learn From Musicians". The sixty or so members and guests of the Fullerton Airport Pilots Association(KFUL) enjoyed it, and several musician pilots were in attendance. OF COURSE I brought our organization to their attention (!!). It was so well received that the Brackett Airport Pilots group has asked me to present it on Sept 1, 2016. Once I have exact info I'll post it online at the FMA Facebook group page. If you're in the LA basin or close by, please come and check it out!

Elton Eisel
Elton L. Eisele taught for 36 years and served as the Director of Bands at Niles North High School for 29 years until his retirement in 2012. His teaching responsibilities included directing the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band, Pep Band, and Pit Orchestra. In 1997 he received his Masters degree from Vandercook College of Music.

Under his leadership, the Niles North Bands earned Championship awards in festivals across the country. In Illinois, participation included IHSA Ensemble Contests where his bands received Division One ratings. They also played in the National Concert Band Festival sponsored through Bands of America. The group participated in the Super State competition at the University of Illinois on several occasions. Besides playing at the Music Educators Association National Conference, his groups also performed at the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Conventions in Peoria, IL numerous times. Besides music, Elton coached in the areas of: Pom and Cheer, Drill Teams, Flag Teams, Boys and Girls Gymnastics and Baseball.

Mr. Eisele received his Private Pilots License in 1981 and owns a C172, Aeronca Defender 65-TAC and a Pitts S-1-C project. He hopes to take the Pitts out of storage and work on it one of these days.
Elton Eisele

He is currently a CFI-ME and travels to Oshkosh every week to instruct EAA employees in the EAA Flight Club. His volunteering started in Oshkosh 35 years ago when he helped Harold Holmes in sale of his Flight Videos. Currently the Chairman of Departure Briefings, he and his crew volunteer to help pilots understand the NOTAM and how to navigate safely when departing AirVenture. He is not alone in volunteering in his family at AirVenture. His wife and four sons have been volunteering for many years.

For 10 years, Elton had the desire to have an EAA Concert Band and kept talking about it to different EAA officials until they gave him the chance to have the band. The band was an immediate success and continues into its ninth year. In that time, there have  been over 450 members of the AirVenture Band over the years. Age of band members have been from the sixth grade students to 92, and have come from 35 states and 6 countries. One of the biggest thrills as a educator is that there are many band members who that have picked up their instruments and started playing again after having not played them for many years. One baritone player rented a instrument from a local music store and by the end of the week he liked it so much he bought it. The band receives the music by email a month before AirVenture to prepare it before the first of two rehearsals on Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning. The band has played on Tuesdays to open the afternoon airshow for the past 3 years and has its full concert on Wednesday at 5:00 pm., at the Theater in the Woods.

STUDENT MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
Kat Olson
2016 FMA Solo Finalist
I may not be marching with Franklin this year and trying to break into finals at BOA Grand Nationals this summer, but wow have I been busy.

I graduated high school! Member of 6 honor societies (math,  history, French, MUSIC, national honor society, and english) I graduated with the highest diploma possible in our district and with a 4.4 GPA. My goodness was I excited to catch up on sleep. High school was awesome but I am so excited to attend the John D. Odegard school of Aerospace at UND!

My last concert after the four years I was in the Franklin High Wind Ensemble was definitely emotional. We played Concertino for Four percussion (Gillingham), Limerick daydreams (Daughtrey) , and Armenian dances (Reed). These pieces were fantastically challenging and we played the crap out of them. If any band director is looking for music to lovingly whip their band with, these are GREAT!

I'm part of the VERY FIRST Women in Aviation International chapter for Nashville!! That started about two weeks ago. It's great connecting with the wonderful ladies of aviation. Building relationships and building communities is something that band taught me and I look forward to continuing that throughout my life.

I've been busy with my new job at an advertising company and with volunteering at the Vanderbilt University Dyer Observatory as a camp counselor and as a volunteer for scheduled public events. I love this observatory. It's where my first sparks of aviation occurred so that's always fun.

And finally I soloed today! (editor's note 6/21/2016) The crosswind in Nashville is out to get me, but that's perfectly fine! I'm all about the hardest training! That's where the best pilots come from.

I'd like to thank all of you at flying musicians for being such a great support line!!! I've been doing Sporty's every single day for quite a bit of time, preparing to crush the living daylight out of my knowledge test and check ride.

Kyle Shea
2016 FMA Solo Finalist
At the beginning of my freshman year I grew interested in  aviation. Often when I tell people that I have an interest in aviationthey are quick to deduce that I would like to be a pilot but I feel the quick judgments that people make prevent people from considering the benefits of learning to fly. Yes, I want to fly and I would love to get a private pilot license. In fact, some time after high school my goal is to get my license.

"I didn't see myself being able to get a license because it is expensive to train and then I found out about the FMA.  FMA made me realize that learning how to fly is something that I can do." It allowed me to see real pilots. It ultimately made me feel more comfortable with my goals because there were other people that were or had experienced the same issues that I have.

I was drawn to the community of pilots the same way I was drawn to music and the community it offered within my school.  I joined the band at my high school late into my freshman year where
Kyle Shea (center)
I quickly learned how to replay the Alto Saxophone; I had played briefly in the fourth grade.  In the music program I participated in the marching band, concert band, and jazz ensemble. I played a solo in our most recent jazz concert. For my senior year I have been chosen as the sectional leader of the woodwinds.

My wish for this summer is to go to as much FMA events as I can so that I interact with other people that have a passion for aviation. As for me I am currently 10% into the Sporty's Learn to Fly Course. So far I am really enjoying it, especially now that I have more time to focus on it. I am so grateful that the FMA provided me with this course simply because it offers an expansive array of aviation learning material.

We wish all of our student members much success in their studies and pursuit of flying and playing music.

Home Field Spotlight
Your Home Field:
FMA members come from all over the world. In the interest of promoting our members, their airports, and aviation, we thought it would be interesting to showcase one member's home field each month.

This month's Home Field Spotlight focuses on  Lebanon Municipal Airport (M54) in Lebanon, Tennessee - home to member and Tennessee Ambassador Gary Piper.

Tell us about  Lebanon Municipal (M54):
M54, Lebanon Municipal Airport, is just a few miles East of Nashville, TN.

Lebanon Municipal Airport is a city-owned public-use airport located two nautical miles southwest of the central business district of Lebanon, a city in Wilson County, Tennessee, United States. The Lebanon Municipal Airport accommodates and services a wide variety of commercial and private aircraft, with a 5,000 foot runway, several modern T-hangars, and corporate hangars.

Wings of Eagles Aviation began flying out of Lebanon in January 2014.This location was a great fit for our company in that Wings is now conveniently located all around Middle Tennessee to offer professional flight training.

The airport provides fuel, maintenance services, and rental car services are available.

What makes it special/unique/interesting/fun?
We have a very active EAA chapter (863) with a large number of Young Eagles flown every year. We also host a 5th Saturday breakfast. The atmosphere is friendly and family like.

There are many musicians and songwriters on the field, including other music industry professionals.

Are there any nearby attractions for FMA members?
Nearby attractions include all things country music in and around Nashville, including The Country Music Hall of Fame, Musician's Hall of Fame and much more, as well as tours of world renowned distilleries, Civil War historic sites, homes of the stars and beautiful flying scenery.

Heaven's Landing Airshow &Concert
The event was spectacular with breathtaking aerobatics by some of our favorite performers, superb music by very talented and up and coming student members, and beautiful views.

"The show was FMA's first attempt at coordinating a larger-scale musical event with professional musicians (Flyte Three's backing band was made up of veteran Nashville session players whose talent has appeared on countless records). FMA wants to develop a full-service music presentation and promotion for events nationwide as a way to raise funds for programs and scholarships while promoting their message. "We hope to attract named artist who are pilots to perform across the country, willing to help FMA raise funds and awareness" -John Zapp.  Heaven's Landing was a test. For Flyte Three, it was key exposure outside of Nashville and for Mike Ciochetti, it was a key promotional event for his development.  All three came together on a gorgeous summer evening on top of the mountain." an excerpt from the post event press release courtesy of Len Assante.
