HUMOR COLUMN
More Jokes from Bob:

A seminary student was preaching his first sermon. He meant to say that "God called me to heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out the devil." However, what came off of his stammering tongue was, "God called me to heal the dead, cast out the sick, and raise the devil."

*****

A young man is playing golf with a priest. At a short hole the priest asks, "What are you going to use on this hole son?"
The young man says, "An eight iron, father. How about you?"
The priest says, "I'm going to hit a soft seven and pray."  The young man hits his eight iron and puts the ball on the green. The priest tops his 7 iron and dribbles the ball out a few yards.
The young man says, "I don't know about you father, but in my church when we pray, we keep our head down."

*****

A minister was worried about asking the congregation for money for repairs, so, he asked the organist if she could play some inspirational music to get the congregation in a giving mood after he made his pitch.
"Don't worry," she said. "I'll think of something."
During the service, the minister said, "We still need $6,000 more for the new roof. Would those who can pledge at least $100 please stand up."
Just then the organist began "The Star Spangled Banner."

*****

The minister stormed into the council and flung his sermon notes on the table.
"Today," he shouted to the church officer, "I have preached to a congregation of asses!"
The Church officer nodded, "So that was why you kept calling them 'brothers and sisters."

*****

The pastor told the search committee, "If I am voted in as pastor of this church, I will work hard to bring us into the 20th century."
Someone spoke up: "Uh, Preacher, don't you mean the 21st century?" The pastor replied, "Let's take it one century at a time."

*****

The pastor was out Christmas shopping for his family when he saw a great train set display in the high-end toy store. After 10 minutes of rapt watching, he told the sales woman, "I'll take it."
"Your son will really like it," she beamed.
The pastor thought a moment and said, "In that case, I'll take two."

*****

A man had a habit of grumbling at the food his wife placed before him at family meals. Then he would ask the blessing.
One day after his usual combination complaint-prayer, his little girl asked, "Daddy, does God hear us when we pray?"
"Why, of course," he replied. "He hears us every time we pray."
She pauses on this a moment, and asked, "Does he hear everything we say the rest of the time?"
"Yes, dear, every word," he replied, encouraged that he had inspired his daughter to be curious about spiritual matters.
However, his pride was quickly turned to humility...
"Then which does God believe?"

TOTH logo
I've been thinking about evangelism a lot lately, about the call of Jesus Christ to preach the Gospel and make disciples.  I'm becoming increasingly convinced that reclaiming an evangelical spirit will be paramount to maintaining a healthy church, both the Church Universal and our own parish.  On November 18-19, there will be an Episcopal Evangelism conference in Dallas.  Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend.  However, I am willing to cover a portion of the costs for someone to go in my place.  Check out the website here. http://www.forwardmovement.org/Pages/About/Events.aspx
If this interests you, please let me know.

Elder Group meets July 25 at TOTH
On July 25th Cathy Walters will serve as host for host the TOTH Elder Group. She has scheduled retired Visiting Nurses Executive Director Sarah Rochester to talk on "End of Life Issues and Five Wishes." The group will meet at 10:00 a.m. in Sherrill Hall; coffee and a light snack will be served.
TOTH ELDER GROUP COFFEE:  On Monday, August 22, Brad Wright's topic will be "The Tubesafone Project:  why music sounds as good as it does."  The tubesafone is unique.  It consists of a trombone mouthpiece, two tees, three stoppers and five tubes. Its range is over three octaves.  So why doesn't this "hypothetical musical instrument" sound like a trombone?  At the August meeting in Sherrill Hall at 10:00 a.m. Brad will use the tubesafone, along with a variety of musical artifacts and recordings, to lead a discussion of the many factors involved when human beings use tools to create music. Coffee and a light snack will be served.
Youth Choir Traveling
On Youth Choir is in Wilkes-Barre this week and traveling back this weekend. Please pray for safe travel and a very blessed time as they learn and as they share their wonderful gifts of music.
The next Smith's Bucks order will be next Tuesday, July 26 -- due by Noon
TOTH's regular order to recharge Smith's Bucks cards is placed every other week, now. This is to try and increase our order and get a larger percentage donation for the church from Smith's. If you don't have a card yet, just put a check in the plate and write "Smith's Bucks new card" on the memo line.
The next deadlines for Smith's orders are the Tuesdays during the week after LANL paydays: July 26, August 9 and 23... Mark your calendars! Thank you for your participation!
Work on the lower parking lot continues
Marcon, the contractor we have selected, continues work on the lower parking lot. We are expecting another week or more of work before the areas are ready for new concrete to be poured. As of today, they are finished with removing all the old pavement and have been preparing the soil below it. As a recap, this work was begun in hopes that we could re-slope the paved surfaces near the building entrances allowing any water which accumulates to have a smoother path as it flows to the drain. The thinking is that if we can get any liquid water to run to the drain, it would be less likely to freeze into ice at the base of the stairs and outside the tool shed.
Your support and continued patience during this work period is greatly appreciated. Look for directional signage through the church building to get to Shop on the Corner and DALA dance studio while we have the lower parking lot closed to traffic.
CHECK OUT TOTH COMMUNITY GARDEN
Our ToTH Community Garden is growing! Zucchini flowers with tiny squash attached for picking soon, tomatoes emerged small and green, about six inches of bean plants needing propping up any day. Other plants we see leafing well are: radishes, pumpkin, watermelon, cucumbers, eggplant and sweet peppers. Want to plant something? There is still space. Want to help pull 'bind weed?' Call Paul Lisowski.

Thanks to Paul and Richard for the hard work they did to prepare the ground and watering system, and plant!
CHILDREN'S BAZAAR DONATIONS
are being accepted (as they are actually all year long!)  Please put your donations in the box by the south entry, near the Church School/Library wing.  A list of suggestions is attached to the box.  This year's Bazaar will be on December 3.  Also be thinking of other ways you can help the committee!  About 60 volunteers are needed!
TOTH Playground Project Update
Yeah! The Playground structure is done and ready for use. However, there is no fence yet so watch your kids closely as they play.
Next step? Jerome Colletti, another Troop 22 Boy Scout will be installing the fence. We are looking at a beautiful, low maintenance, vinyl, privacy fence with gate. Some of the fencing materials have arrived. We will be announcing work days when they are set.

MORE Efficiency in Parish Life Event Planning with "Sign up Genius"!
Parish Life Ministry would like to streamline events and make the distribution of the work load less onerous. We are doing a few things - ensuring events go under the proper ministry so it doesn't all fall back on Parish Life; ensuring there is a coordinator for each event or it won't happen (someone needs to spear head events); online signups for volunteers or food.
If you're not receiving emails from www.SignUpGenius.com (for sign ups at the church), please email me at [email protected].  And if you want to be removed, please also contact me. I have removed a couple of names and added a couple of names already. This is a way to easily sign up to volunteer for set ups, clean ups and potlucks. You can also go to the SignUpGenius web site and click at the top right to look for sign ups. At the next page, enter my email and the security letters. You'll be directed to our TOTH sign ups. Currently we have 3 - Laurie's ordination RSVP and food, graduation BBQ and coffee hour.   Michelle Carr
Summer Faith & Science Dinner & Discussion on Wednesdays
The Los Alamos Faith & Science Forum continues our summer series on the topic "What Makes Us Human?" on July 20 at Kelly Hall at Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church. Please note that we will start 15 minutes earlier than usual so if people want to attend the Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture there is still time to hear Bob's presentation. Dinner will be provided at 5:45 pm, with a presentation at 6:15 and discussion at 6:45 pm, ending around 8 pm. Our hope is that these lectures and discussions will be interesting and accessible to all members of the community interested in faith and science, no matter what religion or scientific background. Talks will be aimed at a general audience. All are welcome. Follow our blog at: www.lafsf.org

About our presenter:
Bob Reinovsky, is an elder at White Rock Presbyterian Church, a practicing physical scientist and program manager at Los Alamos National Laboratory.  He grew up in the Roman Catholic faith, and adopted the Calvinist view that characterizes modern Presbyterians when he was a young adult.   His interest in exploring the intersection of science and religious faith is rooted in his conviction that these two ways of understanding the world around us do not always lead us to the same place; but do complement each other and together make for a richer understanding of who we are and what we are called to be.
