Dear Reader,

Jaw Dropping! Oh yeah, I'll go there.
I want you to know about some events coming up. This week is rather quiet but I think we're resting before the next six weeks and the amazing things we have going on!
A few new books on hand, some great summer weather and a lot of fun are in store.
Art & Soul is coming up and we'll be open both days, but just outside the fence. The best thing to do that weekend, August 20 & 21 is to take Bart or a bus to us.
Take a look at the events we have listed down below. Sunday this week we have a community meeting with Barbers, Books, and Bridges for them to talk about books for the black and brown community.
Next week we have an event for any manager, school administrator, or person who feels like a fish out of water with two authors who want to help everyone work well together. Then we have an event for writers and getting their online presence together with Fauzia Burke. We still have 5 seats left in that one and the price of admission comes with the book.

At long last the Latham Square project is nearing completion.
There will be a ribbon cutting at noon 7/28 and then from 5-8 a number of surrounding merchants will be on the square. Which is actually a triangle. But the whole area is looking great! Please come by!

Next time in be sure to check out the bulletin board for some music, classes and other gatherings of interest.
Thank you for all your support! We are only here because of it. Coming to events, buying books, laughing with us over cards, making suggestions- it's feeling like quite a community here in what still feels like our new store.

Don't forget that we have a used book sale going on. Buy 2 get one free! all the month of July so get the good ones soon!

Happy reading!
Luan
PS you won't believe how many Pokestops there are around us. Just sayin'.

New and Notable

Barkskins by Annie Proulx $32 In the late seventeenth century two illiterate woodsmen, Rene Sel and Charles Duquet, make their way from Northern France to New France to seek a living. Bound to a feudal lord, a "seigneur," for three years in exchange for land, they suffer extraordinary hardship, always in awe of the forest they are charged with clearing, sometimes brimming with dreams of its commercial potential. Rene marries an Indian healer, and they have children, mixing the blood of two cultures. Duquet travels the globe and back, starting a logging company that will prosper for generations. Proulx tells the stories of the children, grandchildren, and descendants of these two lineages, the Sels and the Duquets, as well as the descendants of their allies and foes, as they travel back to Europe, to China, to New England, always in quest of a livelihood or a fortune, or fleeing stunningly brutal conditions-accidents, pestilence, Indian attacks, the revenge of rivals.

The Return by Hisham Matar $26 When he was twelve, Matar and his family went into political exile. Eight years later Matar's father, a former diplomat and military man turned brave political dissident, was kidnapped from the streets of Cairo by the Libyan government and is believed to have been held in the regime's most notorious prison. Now, the prisons are empty and little hope remains that Jaballah Matar will be found alive. Yet, as the author writes, hope is "persistent and cunning." This book is a profoundly moving family memoir, a brilliant and affecting portrait of a country and a people on the cusp of immense change, and a disturbing and timeless depiction of the monstrous nature of absolute power.

I Almost Forgot About You by Terry McMillan  $27 Dr. Georgia Young's wonderful life--great friends, family, and successful career--aren't enough to keep her from feeling stuck and restless. When she decides to make some major changes in her life, quitting her job as an optometrist, and moving house, she finds herself on a wild journey that may or may not include a second chance at love.

The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules by Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg $15.99 Martha Andersson may be seventy-nine-years-old and live in a retirement home, but that doesn t mean she s ready to stop enjoying life. So when the new management of Diamond House starts cutting corners to save money, Martha and her four closest friends Brains, The Rake, Christina and Anna-Gretta (a.k.a. The League of Pensioners) won t stand for it. Fed up with early bedtimes and overcooked veggies, this group of feisty seniors sets about to regain their independence, improve their lot, and stand up for seniors everywhere.
Their solution? White collar crime. What begins as a relatively straightforward robbery of a nearby luxury hotel quickly escalates into an unsolvable heist at the National Museum. With police baffled and the Mafia hot on their trail, the League of Pensioners has to stay one walker s length ahead if it s going to succeed.    This is for someone who wants a fun book. No, really.

The Black Widow by Daniel Silva $27.99 Legendary spy and art restorer Gabriel Allon is poised to become the chief of Israel s secret intelligence service. But on the eve of his promotion, events conspire to lure him into the field for one final operation. ISIS has detonated a massive bomb in the Marais district of Paris, and a desperate French government wants Gabriel to eliminate the man responsible before he can strike again.  They call him Saladin . . .
He is a terrorist mastermind whose ambition is as grandiose as his nom de guerre, a man so elusive that even his nationality is not known. Shielded by sophisticated encryption software, his network communicates in total secrecy, leaving the West blind to his planning and leaving Gabriel no choice but to insert an agent into the most dangerous terrorist group the world has ever known. She is an extraordinary young doctor, as brave as she is beautiful. At Gabriel s behest, she will pose as an ISIS recruit in waiting, a ticking time bomb, a black widow out for blood.

Younger Readers

Book Club   This week we will choose the next 5 books so join us!
To join, read the book and show up. We would love to have you with us.

Next meeting is Thursday, July 21, 6:15. Jenny Offill's novel, Dept. of Speculation.

In the beginning, it was easy to imagine their future. They were young and giddy, sure of themselves and of their love for each other. "Dept. of Speculation" was their code name for all the thrilling uncertainties that lay ahead. Then they got married, had a child and navigated the familiar calamities of family life-a colicky baby, a faltering relationship, stalled ambitions.
When their marriage reaches a sudden breaking point, the wife tries to retrace the steps that have led them to this place, invoking everything from Kafka to the Stoics to doomed Russian cosmonauts as she analyzes what is lost and what remains. In language that shimmers with rage and longing and wit, Offill has created a brilliantly suspenseful love story-a novel to read in one sitting, even as its piercing meditations linger long after the last page.
