Wicked Litchfield County
|
Thieves, rumrunners and rapscallions all color the unsavory side of Litchfield County history. Townspeople accused women of witchcraft simply for not bearing enough children in the early days of the region. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Owen Sullivan and William Stuart took advantage of the county's isolated stretches and a currency shortage to build counterfeiting empires. In 1780, Barnett Davenport's brutal actions earned him infamy as the nation's first mass murderer. Small-time speakeasies slowly took hold, and the omnipresence of alcohol-fueled crime led to the birth of the nationwide prohibition movement. Local historian Peter C. Vermilyea explores these and other devilish tales from the seedier history of Litchfield County.

Meet the Author at 4
Firefly Summer by Nan Rossiter
Thursday, July 28th at 4pm
|
Nan Rossiter returns to The Hickory Stick Bookshop as part of the Meet an Author at 4
series to celebrate the release of her new novel,
Firefly Summer
, on Thursday, July 28
th
at 4pm. Guests can enjoy an intimate afternoon of wine and cheese with the author, followed by discussion and a signing - all for the price of the book! Please call 860-868-0525 to pre-order your book and reserve your place.
About the book:
The close-knit Quinn siblings enjoyed the kind of idyllic childhood that seems made for greeting cards, spending each summer at Whit's End, the family's home on Cape Cod. Then comes the summer of 1964, warm and lush after a rainy spring--perfect firefly weather. Sisters Birdie, Remy, Sailor, Piper, and their brother, Easton, delight in catching the insects in mason jars to make blinking lanterns. Until, one terrible night, eight-year-old Easton drowns in the rising tide.
Decades later, the sisters have carved out separate lives on the Cape. Through love and heartbreak, health issues, raising children, and caring for their aging parents, they have supported each other, rarely mentioning their deep childhood loss. But one evening, as they sit together at Whit's End to watch the sun set, the gathering fireflies elicit memories of that long-ago night, and a tumult of regrets, guilt, and secrets tumble out.
Poignant yet hopeful,
Firefly Summer
is an uplifting story of the resilience of sisterhood and the bright glimpses of joy and solace that, like fireflies after rain, can follow even the deepest heartaches.

Space Case by Stuart Gibbs. It's a murder mystery on the moon in this humorous and suspenseful space adventure from the author of Belly Up and Spy School that The New York Times Book Review called a delightful and brilliantly constructed middle grade thriller. Like his fellow lunarnauts otherwise known as Moonies living on Moon Base Alpha, twelve-year-old Dashiell Gibson is famous the world over for being one of the first humans to live on the moon. And he's bored out of his mind. Kids aren t allowed on the lunar surface, meaning they're trapped inside the tiny moon base with next to nothing to occupy their time and the only other kid Dash's age spends all his time hooked into virtual reality games.
