Faith, Qigong and Tai Chi in a Crisis
Three weeks ago, I had an accident while riding on my horse, Dixie, and ended up with two broken wrists. I tell this story not for sympathy but to share with you an example of how important "I believe" my faith in God, spirit guides and angels, as well as the skills and strength I have built via my consistent practice of Qigong and Tai Chi are.  They have again proved to be my "lifeline" while moving through a challenging experience. Additionally, I have been blessed with a wonderful husband, family and friends that continue to support me as I walk the healing path.

When Dixie spooked at the loud sound of another horse kicking against the outside of the metal arena wall, she reared up on her hind legs and moved forward at the same time. Being of very clear mind, I realized I was going down, and if I continued to fall in the trajectory I was going it would be my head that hit the ground, and I envisioned my neck snapping. So, I consciously twisted my body to the right and do not remember the impact.  When I came back to consciousness, I was on the arena ground, wind knocked out of me and both hands and wrists in excruciating pain and looking a bit oddly twisted. Dixie was standing on the other side of the arena looking at me and questioning if she should come closer or not. I tried to get up but the pain knocked me back to the floor. Here was my situation that I need to deal with:
  1. I was alone.
  2. My phone was in my car, about 30 -40 yards from where I was.
  3. I needed to open the arena door, the barn door and the car door to get to my phone to call for help.
  4. I needed to make sure Dixie was safe, which meant getting her head gear and back pad off and moving her back into the pasture, another gate to open.
I prayed to God, asked my spirit guides and angels to come and help and then listened. What came to mind are qigong and tai chi practices.  Breath deep to get your breath and internal strength back into balance, so I did and then was able to get up to my knees and crawl on them to the arena door.  And, oh my goodness, the door was open about a foot and there was a chair right outside the arena door.

Many Qigong and Tai Chi masters teach the concept of "松 song".  It means "loosen up" and move with effortless internal strength. Basically, with each exhale, calm the body and let the tension out, the releasing of the tension enables your internal strength to increase. So, I continued to breath and release tension and access whatever internal strength I could muster. In time, I had enough strength to use my knees and legs to move to the wall and with my back against the wall shimmied up it to stand.

Using my leg, I moved the sliding arena door further open and sat in the chair and sweat out about five gallons of water. Not sure how long I stayed in the chair, enough to gain more effortless internal strength to get to the barn door, push the button to open the big garage door and walk to the car door and open it.  Luckily or by divine help, my phone was laying upright on the passenger seat, and I called my husband for help.

I  would have loved to just sit in the car and wait, but I needed to get back to Dixie to make sure she would be safe, I had left the arena and barn door open, she could have easily walked out.  I made it back to the arena, and there was Dixie standing at the edge of the arena door, again divine intervention keeping her there.  Her reigns were dragging on the ground, so I used my elbow and teeth to maneuver it off.   Hoping I could get her back out to pasture, I again used my teeth and elbow to remove her back pad. That internal, effortless strength was a Godsend!

I then walked to the pasture gate and determined the lock on the gate was too difficult so went back to the arena, kissed Dixie and closed the arena door with my leg. Back at the car I continued to do deep breathing and imagine warm sunny pain balm moving through my wrists and waited for John.  I think the time lapsed form accident to getting back to the car the second time was about 60 minutes.

The accident happened on Thursday.  Surgery to align the wrist bones and place hardware, a plate and screws in both wrists took place on Friday. With the help of my husband John and my friend, Molly, I went back to teaching my qigong and tai chi classes that Monday and continue to do so as I get stronger and gain more flexibility in my hands and wrists.  Continuing to practice and teach qigong and tai chi is very empowering and healing for me, physically, psychologically and spiritually, and I hope the same for my students. I thank my students and facility owners for being patient with me and engaging with me in a beautiful practice that is an ever evolving state of improvement without stress and judgement.  My passion for practicing and sharing qigong and tai chi is even stronger than before!

In my readings and experiential learning regarding meditation and meditation in motion (qigong and tai chi), I learned that a benefit of meditation is experiencing a clarity of mind in crisis situations. Yep that is definitely true for me!
