The American Society of Clinical Oncology has selected the Patient Navigator Model, a personalized approach to informing and enrolling African American cancer patients into clinical trials, for inclusion in its 2016 review of major advances in clinical cancer research. Developed by UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center Director Dr. Mona Fouad, the model addresses staggering disparities--fewer than 10% of all cancer trial patients are minorities.
