Just Eat It - a food waste story
(movie screening)

This screening forms part of our FREE, monthly sustainability  program - Common Thread.

Join us to watch the movie 'Just Eat It' - a shocking and strangely compelling journey into food rescue.

Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of food waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping and survive only on discarded food. What they find is truly shocking.

What: Just Eat It - a food waste story (movie screening and discussion)
When: Wednesday 3 August, 6:45pm for a 7pm start
Where: Marion Cultural Centre
Cost: FREE

Discover the Microbats of Marion

Nine microbat species occur within the metropolitan Adelaide area, but because they are small, nocturnal and difficult to detect, few people notice them!

Join us for a community workshop with local bat researcher Dr Annette Scanlon, under the guidance of local bat expert, Terry Reardon (SA Museum) at Warriparinga.

We will discuss the local bats and their role in the ecosystem, how to monitor bats and provide a hands-on trial of using the bat detection equipment, and install two bat detectors to collect data in the days after.

What: Discover Microbats
When: Tuesday 16 August, 5:30pm - 7pm
Where: Warriparinga, Warriparinga Way, Bedford Park
Cost: FREE
RSVP: bookings essential as numbers are limited. Book here!

Ditch the plastic this July

Plastic Free July aims to raise awareness of the problems and amount of single-use disposable plastic in our lives and challenges people to do something about it.

The challenge is quite simple...attempt to refuse single-use plastic during July or try the TOP 4: plastic bags, water bottles, takeaway coffee cups and straws.

By 2050 its estimated there will be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans. Most comes from land and was was once in our hands. Refuse single-use plastic and together lets keep our oceans clean.

Visit Plastic Free July website for information about the challenge, plastic free alternatives and the impact of plastic.

Turning plastic into playgrounds

'Soft' plastics that you can scrunch in a ball should never go in your recycling bin at home as they can't be processed at kerbside processing facilities and get caught in the sorting machines. They are among the most common contaminants in household recycling bins.

Recycle your soft plastics in specially marked bins (pictured) at local Coles and Woolworths stores so that they can be turned into outdoor furniture for Aussie primary schools and pre-schools.

Types of soft plastics that can be recycled in this special program include:
· Shopping bags including reusable 'green' bags
· Fresh fruit and vegie bags
· Bubble wrap
· Dry cleaning bags
· Bread bags
· Newspaper and magazine wraps
· Biscuit and confectionery packaging
· Rice & pasta packets and frozen food bags

Visit the Recycle website  for more information and recycling locations.

Help Adelaide become carbon neutral

We need your ideas to create the world's first carbon neutral city
Do you work, study, live or visit the City of Adelaide? Share your ideas on how Adelaide can become the world's first carbon neutral city.

Engagement kicked off last week, with a workshop that saw leaders from the all sectors of the community brainstorm ideas on how Adelaide can become more energy efficient, achieve zero emissions transport, improve renewable energy uptake and reduce waste.

Carbon Neutral Adelaide is a joint partnership between the South Australian Government and Adelaide City Council. Climate Change Minister Ian Hunter said Adelaide can only become carbon neutral if we all work together.

Bright ideas aren't limited to those at the workshop - anyone who works, lives, studies or visits the City of Adelaide is encouraged to provide ideas. Click here to have your say.
We hope you have found this information useful. We value your feedback and encourage you to get in contact with us.
