WHAT WE'RE READING
A cross-section of articles we've read this week about HIV/AIDS, STIs and a wide cross-section of structural and systemic factors impacting HIV/AIDS in Black communities.

HIV/AIDS Prevention Is Affordable, Achievable And Better Than Cure

On the 4th day of the International AIDS Conference underway in Durban, the significant proportion of delegates have underscored the significance of multi-pronged approach to HIV mitigation. This assertion is further strengthened by the Department of Health which calls for a shift from over-emphasis of treatment to prevention. In the context of global economic turmoil, the focus on closing the tap on new HIV infections is cardinal than chasing a moving target of being treatment focused. Importantly, the multi-pronged approach does not negate the importance of searching for a scientific long lasting cure, but urges for a renewed focus and support of prevention mechanisms.

Sex Workers Continue to Call for Decriminilisation at AIDS Conference

Pietermaritzburg - With estimates that 77% of sex workers in Durban are HIV-positive, local and foreign sex workers on Monday called on delegates at the 2016 International Aids Conference to decriminalise sex work.

Founded in May of 1999, the Black AIDS Institute is the only national HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on Black people. The Institute's Mission is to stop the AIDS pandemic in Black communities by engaging and mobilizing Black institutions and individuals in efforts to confront HIV. The Institute interprets public and private sector HIV policies, conducts trainings, offers technical assistance, disseminates information and provides advocacy mobilization from a uniquely and unapologetically Black point of view.

Support the Black Aids Institute through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC# 12320). The Institute holds the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence for meeting the highest standards of public accountability.
