Lightscape Project Ready to Shine!
After five years of planning, the steeple and tower lighting phase of the Burlington Lightscape Project is being completed. Six downtown churches, along with the Heritage Center and Majestic Estate, will have their dramatic architecture illuminated at the official lighting celebration on Friday, August 19.
This Downtown Partners project cost about $250,000 and was paid for by private donors. An endowment has been created for the perpetual maintenance of the custom designed LED fixtures. The only costs incurred by the building owners is for the electricity, which should be quite low.
The lighting celebration is free and open to the public, beginning at 8 PM with a short video shown back to back at the Capitol Theater. Desserts and beverages will be available, along with steeple ornaments and information about the project. The steeples and towers will be lighted at 9 PM, accompanied by a ringing of all the church bells. Donors to the project will meet at Martini's at 9:15 for a special reception.

Farmers Market Heads Up
The Jefferson St. Farmers Market continues to attract big crowds and more new vendors and food vendors than ever before, enticing people to enjoy the market and downtown longer. The market is on the 300-500 blocks of Jefferson from 5 to 7 PM every Thursday for the rest of the season. On August 11, join us for the annual hot pepper eating contest, with prizes for the winners! A special thanks to Great Western Bank for their support of the market.

A BIG thank you to Hillaurie Fritz Bonar, Pat Curtis, Gretchen Walls, Robin Schneiderman, Doreen Roy, Elaine Hanna, Jerry Johnson, Coleen Burns, Eric Renteria, and Megan Bell for putting together an immensely successful Very Vintage Market! These Marketing & Promotions Committee volunteers spent many hours planning and presenting the event, which drew over forty vendors and thousands of people to downtown on July 16. They started with no budget and pulled it off in admirable style.

The Iowa Downtown Conference is taking place in Mason City August 2 - 4. Wendy Klein of Bella Ragazza will be competing in the statewide Open 4 Business competition at the conference.

Work is wrapping up at the new Hopefully Yours building at 617 Jefferson; expect the new location to be open by fall. Also, framing is beginning for the 48 new apartments in the Tama Complex.

Small Scale Developer Training Workshop
Creating appropriately scaled infill for vacant sites in downtowns can be difficult. Often, large-scale developers want to knock down neighboring buildings to accommodate large scale development, which reduces the variety of building designs and uses. The Incremental Development Alliance presents a 1-day workshop in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, September 14. It will provide small business owners, neighborhood advocates, design and real estate professionals, and builders with an overview of the skills and resources needed to navigate development financing, zoning, site selection, and building design to assemble a small scale real estate development project. The workshop will also address issues surrounding becoming a developer, risk management, and basic business setup and contracting methods.
The goal of this workshop is to help gain a better understanding of the development process in order to build a new supply of investors that can help fill in the "missing teeth" in our existing neighborhoods. It takes place at the National Czech and Slovak Museum & Library.
