From Russia With Love...
The book of Acts records:  "During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, 'Come over to Macedonia and help us.'  After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them." (Acts 16:9-10) In 1991 the Communist government of the USSR fell, and for the first time in over 75 years, the people of Russia were provided the opportunity to worship freely.

The United Methodist Church, concluding that God was calling us to take the Gospel message of love and grace to Russia, started a new church in Samara.   Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church has been a faithful partner, mentor, and sister church from the beginning.  This past June (June 22-30) HPCUMC sent a team to re-connect and deepen our relationship.  Upon our arrival one of the pastors of Samara UMC said to me, "HPCUMC is our Paul!"

The Spirit of our living God is at work in profound ways at Samara UMC!  From day one to the day we departed, the people of Samara UMC showered our team with Colossians 3:12-17 kind of hospitality and love!  I was humbled to be in their presence, to receive their love, and to be encouraged in our common work for the Lord.  Needless to say, there is no language barrier when it comes to sharing the love of God through Christ Jesus our Lord!

Candy for the Congo-Update

Thank you to all who have brought candy and shoelaces for the thank you gifts from the West Ohio mission team.  I am one of ten people who has answered the call to teach discipleship and leadership development to children and youth from the Kamina Childrens Home in the North Katanga Conference of the United Methodist Church, located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We have all the candy and shoelaces needed; the people of the Congo will be blessed by your generosity!

CURRENT NEEDS:
  • scraps of plain cotton fabric (at least 12" X 12") for the handmade bags that will be constructed.
  • People to sew and paint (peace in three languages with fabric paint and markers).  Sewers are invited to bring their machines, shears, and thread.  We will provide all the materials for painting on the bags.

We will be gathering on Tuesday, July 26 from 2:00 - 6:00 pm  in the Welcome Center. Thank you in advance for praying that our team will be blessed as we both share the light of Christ and receive it from our friends in the DRC!- Pastor Cathy

OTR Summer Reading Camp

Our Summer Reading Camp started last week and will continue for the next five weeks at the Over-the-Rhine Community Church (formally Nast Trinity UMC). There are ten children enrolled, 2nd-4th graders, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm every weekday, from July 11 - August 12.

Volunteers are needed to read with the students and help them with their assignments and daily activities when they are not with the reading specialists provided by SRC. Each student has a notebook and are asked to answer questions about each book they read and the notebook also has story sheets with questions. SCR provides a large selection of children's books and the students can choose the books they read each day. A volunteer for each student would be ideal.

Last week we averaged 2-3 volunteers for each hour of the 4-hour program. The children love having someone to read, work and do activities with them. It would be helpful if you would send me (lonkaylor@fuse.net) a list of the dates and times you're available, but showing up without notice is fine too!

Over-the-Rhine Community Church is at 1310 Race Street. Parking is available on the street ($0.75/hour) or in the garage ($1.00/hour unless otherwise marked).
