Wellesley Books Newsletter
  July 20th, 2016
Sunday, July 31st is Harry Potter's birthday, and it is also the release date for Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, a new play based on an original story by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, and Jack Thorne.  While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places. Sounds great, doesn't it?
We intend to celebrate -- Wellesley Books-style -- and we hope you'll join us for the festivities.  We will have games, trivia, goodies, raffle prizes, and wand-making, all starting from the moment we open our doors at 11:00 AM, until 5:00 PM.  Don't be a muggle -- be a part of the magic!

Tomorrow!  Thursday, July 21st, 7:00 PM.  Delia Ephron shares her electrifying new novel, Siracusa, a powerful meditation on marriage and deceit. When two New Yorkers travel to Italy with their friends from Maine, old deceptions and infidelities are dredged into the light of the sun-drenched coast of the Ionian Sea.  Told in the voices of alternating characters, Rashomon-style, this novel unfolds with the pacing of a psychological thriller and delivers an unexpected final act that nobody will see coming.  Our bookseller Marilyn really loved this book!

Where's Waldo? In Wellesley, of course! The famous children's book character in the striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting twenty-five local businesses throughout our community this month.  There are just eight days left in the hunt! If you haven't already, stop by Wellesley Books to pick up your passport with the names of all the participating locations, then get your passport stamped or signed for each Waldo you spot. The first 125 Waldo seekers to have their passports stamped or signed at ten or more places can bring their passports back to Wellesley Books to collect prizes. Collecting store stamps or signatures at twenty or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers entry into the grand prize drawing, which will be held at our Where's Waldo party on Thursday, July 28th, here at Wellesley Books.  The party will be open for all who participate in the search for the elusive Waldo!

Bookseller Recommendations!
Marilyn  Recommends:

  Siracusa by Delia Ephron
This is the story of two complicated marriages, one vulnerable child, and a trip to Italy that changes all of their lives forever.  The couple who are writers give us fascinating insights into the process of writing and the discovery of ideas. The family dynamics of the other couple and their daughter are also uniquely intriguing. The trip and interactions intensify as the story builds to a very compelling conclusion, plus I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Rome and Sicily and the interpretation of events in each traveler's voice.

Peter Recommends:

My Father Before Me by Chris Forhan
This memoir is a deeply moving account of a son's struggle to understand the father he barely knew. Ed Forhan, whose own parents abandoned him as a child, so thoroughly wrapped himself in a cocoon of self-protection that he became almost a specter within his own family. Chris was still a teenager when his father killed himself, one final act of disappearance in a life filled with them. Set against the backdrop of middle-class suburban life in the 60s and 70s, this is a beautifully written, haunting account of one family's silent tragedy.

Phyllis Recommends:

The Last One by Alexandra Oliva
Hunger Games meets The Stand in this fast paced dystopian thriller.  Imagine being a contestant in a survival reality television show.  Sometime during your solo mission, unbeknownst to you, a deadly pandemic erupts, quickly killing most of the world's population.  You believe every strange situation you encounter is a challenge issued by the producers of the show.  One can only imagine the finale of this game show nightmare.  A fascinating premise with page turning action -- just make sure you keep the lights on!

William Recommends:

The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley
Winner of the Costa Prize for first novel, this chilling ghost story unfolds subtly, creating a slowly churning atmosphere of dread.  When a child's body is uncovered near a shrine, a man recalls when he was a boy and his Catholic mother took his mentally challenged brother to a holy shrine in the countryside.  Nothing is quite as it seems, and the trip ends in tragedy and terror.  The Loney is as eerie as it can be without gore and violence, but it will sneak up on you in a way reminiscent of a classic M.R. James or Algernon Blackwood story.

Charlie

Charlie is a six year old Maltese from Natick who visited us recently and showed us how he can stand on two legs!  He loves eating anything, but he especially enjoys our biscuits.  He also loves chasing squirrels, although he hasn't caught one yet.  Welcome to Wellesley Books, Charlie!

"That's what literature is. It's the people who went before us, tapping out messages from the past, from beyond the grave, trying to tell us about life and death! Listen to them!"
