    Get Set for Summer

Heart Flower Unit 141 hosts some great events for players of all levels beginning in early June.

Intermediate and Newcomer players have two dedicated sectionals on June 2 and July 27. Both are Teams events at Bala Golf Club.

Players of all levels will greatly enjoy the Philadelphia Regional at Valley Forge (June 22-28). With a completely revised schedule and chock-full of new events including knockouts starting everyday and tons of Golden Opportunity, there's something for everybody. Ready about all of these events in the articles below and use the links in Upcoming Events or in the articles to find out even more information.

Philadelphia Regional: Big Changes Part 3

Hopefully you have been reading about the upgrades coming to the Philadelphia Regional at Valley Forge (June 22-28). Part 1 in a series of articles in this newsletter covered the general changes and schedule; Part 2 focused on hospitality. This month, we highlight a few of the interesting and special features of the tournament.

As you might have read in Part 1, this year's schedule has been revamped. There is a wide range options for players at all levels and, unlike past years, new knockouts start every day. The tournament also offers something new (an a District 4 exclusive): Golden Mid-Flight events. Limited to players with under 3,000 masterpoints, these events include both pairs and teams options.

Newcomers have many opportunities too. There are bracketed games every day as well as a free lesson (noon) and free 0-20 masterpoint relaxed game (2:00 PM) on Monday. A complete daily slate of lectures is also available to I/N players.

The Philadelphia Regional supports The Longest Day, a nationwide ACBL charity event that benefits Alzheimer's research and support. Throughout the regional, there will be charity games, a VIP raffle, and "Ask the Expert" Q&A session fundraisers to benefit the cause. You can kick-start the effort now by making a donation at the ACBL website: Just a reminder to make reservations soon if you think you might want to stay at the hotel. The bridge rate expires on May 30 or when the reserved room block fills up.

Next month, we'll explain many details about the operations and logistics of the tournament itself -- the where, when, and how of getting around the hotel and finding what you're looking for. In the meantime, if you have questions, contact tournament chair Meyer Kotkin at [email protected] .

    Four Sectional Tournaments
    Set for I/N Players

Intermediate and Newcomer players can plan for four upcoming sectionals, three of which take place in the next three months.

Three Sectional Teams tournaments take place on Tuesday June 2, Monday July 27, and Tuesday October 20. All of those events are limited to players with fewer than 500 masterpoints. They are two-sessions, award silver points, and take place at Bala Golf Club. The cost is $90/team or $45/pair, and includes lunch. Pairs may register without a team and will be paired into teams at the director's discretion. Pre-registration is required. For questions or to register, contact I/N tournament chair Bruce Lang at [email protected]. For more information, click these links to the tournament flyers: June 2, July 27, October 20.

The fourth event is a split-site Sectional on Tuesday June 16 and Wednesday June 17. Players can play on one of the two days only or both at their choice. Both events start at 10 AM.

The first day is a Non-Life Master pairs event at Pine Run (777 Ferry Rd, Doyletown). It is a stratified event for players in brackets 0-20 newcomer, 0-100, 100-200, and >200. The event benefits The National Parkinson Foundation, costs $20/pair, and requires preregistration. Space is limited, so please contact Jane Ball ([email protected]) with questions or to register.

The second day takes place at Raffles for Bridge (3901 Conshohocken Ave, Philadelphia) and is a stratified NLM Swiss Teams event. The cost for this event is $90/team and preregistration is also required. For more information or to register, contact Wendy de Chadarevian at [email protected].

Unit 141 After-School Program Off to a Flying Start!

As you might have read in last month's newsletter, Unit 141 has launched an after-school bridge program at Independence School in Philadelphia. The classes introduce students in grades 6-8 to bridge basics.

Here are some images of the students enjoying the game.

Table Tips: Fill Out a Card

[With a lot of tournaments, especially I/N tournaments, coming up in the next few months, it seems like a good time to reprise this Table Tips from January 2014. If you are a newer player and need some advice on filling out a card, please be sure to ask a club owner, director, teacher, or more experienced player you know. If you're struggling to decide what to play, visit Larry Cohen's website for practical, clear advice. --ED]

convention card Did you know that the rules of bridge require that a pair of players have two identical cards completed and available at the table. If not, they incur a penalty and must play SAYC and standard carding. Does that rule seem Draconian or unnecessary? Perhaps, but the rule exists to insure that the game remain open and fair to all. As bidding systems become more and more complicated, it seems even more important that players make their systems known.

In short, fill out a card with each of your partners. You can store and easily revise multiple cards on bridgewinners.com or hand-write one with the rudiments of your system even at the last minute if you need to. If you encounter a pair that lacks a card, whether it's a local game or the most competitive NABC+ event, we suggest you call the director and let him or her sort it out for your protection and the fairness of the game for all.

    Card Hand on Right
STaC Correction: The Unit 141 STaC for May 4-10 mentioned in previous newsletters is actually a Unit 190 STaC. Clubs in Unit 190, but not Unit 141, will be awarding silver points during those dates. Please note the correction.
