Hunger Hero Sandwiches now Available at CTB and Ithaca Bakery

Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick Samples one of the final sandwiches.
On June 2nd Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick reprised his role as culinary judge and supporter of local food security programs for the Third Annual Myrick Hunger Hero Competition sponsored by Collegetown Bagels (CTB) and Ithaca Bakery. The Mayor chose his favorite from among three finalists which were drawn from over forty different recipes submitted by the community.

The two runners up included a vegetarian chickpea mash made from a chickpea salad on pumpernickel submitted by the Humans Service Coalition staff and a Polish inspired kielbasa and potato latke sandwich on rye submitted by Ian Mahoney and Jaclyn Petruzzelli.

The winning sandwich - titled "The Nessa" - is made from waffles, crispy chicken, hot sauce, maple syrup, and cheddar cheese.

A portion of the proceeds from these sandwiches will be donated to United Way of Tompkins County (UWTC), and all funds will be invested in local food programs.

Today is the last day to enjoy these three tasty sandwiches and support UWTC hunger and food programs.

Thank you to all who made our 4th Annual Cans Along Cayuga Food Drive a Success!

Some of the food collected during the Cans Along Cayuga Food Drive
On June 3rd Cayuga Radio Group, local elementary schools, and United Way of Tompkins County joined together for this year's successful Cans Along Cayuga food drive!

In the weeks before the parade, the four schools - Enfield Elementary School, Fall Creek Elementary School, South Hill Elementary School and Belle Sherman Elementary School - collected over 600 pounds of nonperishable food - nearly doubling what they collected last year.

A total of 3,000 pounds of food were collected from the elementary schools and Cornell University through the Dump and Run Program, and picked up by Cayuga Radio Group on-air personalities and staff during the Ithaca Festival Parade on Friday, June 3rd.

All non-perishable food items from the Cans Along Cayuga food drive have been distributed to 13 food pantries or community organizations in Tompkins County.

President James A Brown praised the efforts of the elementary schools and the wider community - highlighting the importance of fighting hunger and food insecurity across our community.
